I. Организационный этап.

Teacher: Good morning, boys. I am glad to see you today.

Teacher: 1. Who is on duty today? What is the date today? What is the day of the week? (P.1 – I am. It’s the 21st of October. It’s Wednesday.)

2. Is it your favourite school day? Why? (P.2 - It’s one of my favorite days because we have PE today and it’s my favourite subject. P.3 – I don’t like Wednesday because we have too many lessons today. Etc.)

3. Do you like going to school? Why? ( P. 1,2,3… - I like going to school because I can learn something new / enjoy studying / can meet my friends / get known about schools in other countries. Etc.)

4. What do you think we will talk about today? (P. – May be about school life?)

II.

Teacher: Now, look at the board (Слайд 1) and read the phrase:

Education is the movement from darkness to light (Allan Bloom, US philosopher).

Teacher: Think and try to solve this phrase. What are your thoughts?

(Answers of children: Perhaps he wanted to tell that education might be got from A to Z, from little to big, from nothing to everything, from ignorance to knowledge, from dream to reality, from simple to hard).

Teacher: Very good! This is the quotation of the great American philosopher.

And I hope that you’ve already guessed the theme of our lesson. What do you think? (P 3: I think we’ll speak about studying, schools, and maybe universities).

Teacher: Great! But not only about these things. We are going to speak about different types of schools and today you’ll also get knowledge about education in different countries. Do you think it’s an important information for you? Why? (P 1: We are finishing school in a year and very soon we’ll enter the universities and get different professions. P 2: Maybe I’ll have a chance to move to another country and I should know more about education there.).

Teacher: Thanks for your full and rather clever answer. You are such a farseeing person.

So, let’s start our lesson.

III.

Teacher: Today we are going to speak about schools. But at first write some new words in your exercise-books: boarding school - школа-интернат, пансион, single-sex school - школа раздельного обучения, co-educational school - школа совместного обучения, state school -государственная школа, private school - частная школа, specialist school - профильная школа. Read these words after the speaker, please.

Teacher: Well, now I want you to tell us about your school. Look at this model and make a text about your school: (Слайды 3-5).

Our school is __________ (P 1: a modern state co-educational school). Education and studying is _________ (P 1: free). We go to school 6 days a week and we have 6 lessons every day. But on Wednesdays we have 7 lessons.

At school we study _________ (P 1: History, Art, Physical Education, English, Russian, Literature, Chemistry, Geography, Maths). My favourite subject is _______ (English). We learn to speak English, ________ (write letters, essays, postcards, articles, read texts and listen to audio-texts) and it will help me in my future ________ (because I dream to travel a lot).

I get to school by school bus. It takes me 15 minutes because I live far from my school.

In our school pupils don’t wear school uniforms, but we must have white up and dark down. For example, girls wear _________ (white blouse, black skirt). And boys wear ________ (white shirt, black trousers).

There are a lot of classrooms in my school, a large library, gym and a playground where we often play different games after the lessons.

Also there is a canteen where we can eat tasty soup, porridge, tea. Also on Saturdays we eat scones, biscuits, sweets and so on.

This is my favourite 10th form. Our form teacher is Marina Dmitrievna. She is a teacher of English. Our teachers are very kind but strict. We love our school. After leaving school we may get into Colleges and Universities.

Teacher: We live in Russia and you know much about its schools and universities. Now I suggest you to watch a presentation about the British education. There are subtitles which you should follow if you have some difficulties to understand it. Please, listen attentively, then you are to ask and answer some questions.

Teacher: Did you like it? (P 1: Yes, I liked it very much. P 2: It was so amusing. Etc.).

Teacher: Ok! Imagine that you are Russian students and you are British ones. You have two minutes to think over the questions you want to ask each other. One or two questions are enough. Don’t forget to introduce yourself.

- Hi ! I’m Jane . At what age do Russian pupils go to school?

- Hi! I’m Kostya. Russian pupils go to school at the age of 7.

- Hello! I’m Georgiy. Do all the British pupils wear a school uniform?

- Hi! I’m Bob. Not all, but most British students wear uniform and it differs in different schools.

- Hello! I’m Tom. How many days do you go to school? Do you go to school on Saturdays?

- Hello Tom! My name’s Danil. There are some schools where pupils study 5 days a week, but we go to school 6 days a week.

- Hi! My name is Ann. How many lessons do you have a day?

- Hello! I’m Kostya. We usually have 6 lessons a day but on Wednesday we have 7 ones.

Teacher: Now let’s work in pairs. The tasks are on your desks on the green sheets of paper. One of you will get a sheet of paper with some word combinations and the other one will take ones with their descriptions. Your common task is to find pairs as quickly as you can.

Teacher: So, let’s check it up. Answer my questions. And everybody check your answers.

-What is a boarding school? (P 1: It’s a school which students live in during school term.)

-What is a single-sex school? (P 2: It’s a school for only boys or only girls.)

-What is a co-educational school? (P 3: It’s a school for boys and girls.)

-What is a state school? (P 4: It’s a school owned by the government.)

-What is a private school? (P 1: It’s a school you usually have to pay to go to.)

-What is a specialist school? (P 2: It’s a school students go to for a particular reason. For example, to become actors).

-Well done! Now we know that there are different types of schools with different rules. But what is common for all these schools? Look at the presentation. Kostya, what do you think about it? (P 3: I think that all schools have a common purpose).

Teacher: Sure, you are absolutely right! And what is the main purpose for any school? (P 2: The main purpose is to give well educated people to our society, who would be able to get a profession and then find a job)

Teacher: Yes, I agree with you.

Teacher: I like your work today. Very good! You see that there are some differences and some common characteristics in education of Russia and Britain.
