Introduction
There are certain stereotypes of national character which are well known in Britain, Russia and the USA. What is a stereotype? Do you know any stereotypes about different nations? Which stereotype do you find the most amazing? the strongest? the silliest? the most widely spread in the world? Beliefs (убеждения) or traits (черты) that we attribute to a group of people are called stereotypes. Stereotypes are usually extreme, most often negative and false: the Germans are accurate, the Italians-hot-tempered, artistic, the French-stylish, amorous (влюбчивы), etc.)
You are invited to take part in the creative project “National Character. What are the British, Russians and Americans like?” Are we alike? Do we have similar national identity? Do we like the same things? You will read and investigate the information on the topic using your critical thinking. You will have to work individualy and in groups, mark the information in the table “Insert”, answer thin and thick questions,etc. At the end you have to make group presentations on the final variant of the national characters (“The British”, “Russians”, “Americans”) Good luck!
The Task
Your task is:
To discuss stereotypes about British, Russian and American national characters and present them in the form of 3 clusters;
To read the texts, to mark the information in the special table “Insert”;
To answer thin and thick questions; true and false statements;
To make your own conclusion using conversational formulas and constructions;
To discuss in groups and present the final product- 3 mini-projects on the British, Russian and American national characters;
The Process
Do you associate any stereotypes with the Russians, the British and the Americans? Let’s write your thoughts in the form of a cluster. Fill in three clusters, please.
