Christmas traditions in Northen Ireland

1)It is unlikely that in modern Europe there is another country like Ireland, where the attitude to Christmas is so important.

2) Ireland does NOT work at Christmas. Almost all shops, bars, public transport, restaurants, government offices and taxis take days off from December 24 to 26. Everything you need for a celebration in Ireland is prepared in advance. The only place you can go on Christmas in Ireland is the church.

3) December 24. On this day, the Irish clean and decorate houses for the new year and Christmas. In Ireland, it is still customary to put 9 carrots under the Christmas tree - a treat for each of the reindeer from Santa Claus's magic sleigh team.

4) On Christmas Eve, a candle is lit by the youngest member of the family, which symbolizes the hospitality of the house.

5)You need to put this candle next to the window facing the street so that all passers-by can see that kind people live in this house.

6) The Irish have New Year's superstitions. In the first minutes of the New Year, it is necessary to drive away all evil spirits from your home.

7)You need to do this by tapping a dried piece of bread on the walls of the house, accompanying the knock with sharp shouts or the universal prayer "Our Father".

8) Christmas Dinner . It is a plate full of juicy ham and roast turkey! The table is normally covered with food like stuffing , carrots , gravy , roast potatoes and sausages! For dessert we have Christmas pudding which is delicious!.

Christmas is not Christmas without:
