The White House

Washington, D. C. is the capital of the USA. It was built in the end of the 18th century. George Washington, the first president, with the French engineer Pierre L’Enfant chose the place for the new city. Pierre L’Enfant planned the city and the president’s home was the part of the plan.

Today1600 Pensylvania Avenue is a very special address. It is the address of the White House, the presidential palace, the home of the president of the United States. The building has three stores. Originally, it was grey. And the first president who lived there was John Adam, the second president of the United States, with his wife. But his wife didn’t like the new house. She said it was always cold.

In 1812 the United States and Britain went to war. British burned many buildings, and the presidential palace. After that the building was rebuilt. To cover marks of fire, the building was painted white. Then people started to name it the White House.

The White House is one of the most popular places to visit in the United States. Every year more than 1.5 million tourist visit it.
