  1. Warming up.

Good afternoon, dear friends! I’m very glad to see you.

I hope this smiling face will follow us the whole talk. Cheer up! There were many different, important and useful inventions in the 20th century such as a TV-set, a video, a camera, a walkie-talkie, a vacuum-cleaner and so on. These things are common for us today.

Now be attentive, please.

Can you do these sums quickly?

5,200+6,850

10,800 – 1355

Why can’t you count very quickly? You are the best pupils in Maths, I know.

Can you store 12 volumes of encyclopedia in your memory? It’s impossible.

Can you guess who or what can do it?

You are quite right, it is a computer. A computer is the invention of the 20th century too. Its benefits are numerous, yet much can be said against them. I think the main disadvantage of computers is that staring at a screen for a long time can do harm to the eyes and sitting on a chair for hours is certainly not healthy. Secondly, computers distract from personal communication. Also, people can become anti-social and stay at home to use their computer. Finally, the most important argument against the use of computers is that more jobs are done by computers, the less are done by people. However, the advantages of computers are numerous, such as educational benefits, especially to children. School subjects become more interesting when they are on a computer screen. And then, computers can be fun with a lot of games which can be played on them. In addition, computers are valuable to any business, making life easier and saving time by being capable of storing a lot of information at the touch of a button. And one more thing, a person can increase his powers of concentration.

The theme of our talk today is Computers (Friends or Foes?)

In order to answer this question we should do some tasks during our talk:

  • Learn some new words on this topic;

  • Listen to the story;

  • Get acquainted with computer slang;

  • Read the text;

  • Discuss problems of computer addiction.

  1. Lexics. Now, let’s start with a computer itself. I’m sure, you know all the parts of the computer, but let us check it up.

Repeat after me, please.

A monitor / a screen

A tower/ a processor

A diskette/ a floppy disk

A key board

A mouse

A mouse-pad

This time I’ll give you definitions to memorize all the words. What’s this?

  1. A thing on which we can see pictures and texts is …

  2. Look at the blackboard. Your next task is to learn the spelling of the words. You should guess: what words are under these colourful sheets of paper? The first letters are given to you. Let’s try… (m…)

  3. Now, we’ll have some written practice.

Take sheets of paper and fill in the blanks with the words given on the blackboard. (Appendix 1)

I’ll give you one minute. Let’s, check up and read the sentences.

  1. Slang.

Do you know that there is a special world-chat language? It is a net slang.

Can you recode these abbreviations? Look at the screen and try your best.

What do all these letters mean? (Appendix 2)

Read and try to guess. Great discovery! Well done.

  1. Listening.

(The photo of Bill Gates is on the screen of the computer)

  1. Do you know this handsome man?

  2. Where is he from?

  3. What is he famous for?

I give you sheets of paper; I’d like you to know about this extraordinary man. You’ll listen to the text Mr. Microsoft and do some tasks. (Appendix 3) Please, look through the first task.

  1. You are to choose the right answer, put a tick.

  2. The second task is to answer the questions. Please, read them and listen to the tape again.

I hope, you’ll be able to use the information about this outstanding at your computer studies.

IV. Usage of Computers.

I’d like to speak about the necessity of using computers. Have you got a computer? Do you need it? What for? Let me help you with some pictures on the screen of the computer. (Computer presentation made by some pupils beforehand)

  • To type the text;

  • To visit countries in virtual reality;

  • To play games;

  • To read books;

  • To have pen-pals;

  • To use the Internet…

V. Exercises for eyes.

Now, it’s high time for us to have a rest. Let’s do some exercises for our eyes and listen to the music of my favourite group. (Appendix 4)

Oh, you are so energetic now and you are ready to go on with our work.

VI. Reading.

I’m sorry, but I think computers are not always friends.

Let’s read the text «A computer addiction. What is it?» (Appendix 5) I wish you were more careful not to become a computer addict.

VII. Advantages and disadvantages.

I hope you remember the theme of our talk.

I’d like you to think about advantages and disadvantages of using computers. (Appendix 6)

I give you some cards: the first group is to choose advantages and the second – disadvantages, stick them on the blackboard. Our «faces» will help us.

VII. So, as you see computer has become an everyday part of our lives. It’s omnipresent, always on… Don’t we spend too much of our precious time in front of it? Is Computer a good thing or a bad one? I think a bit of both. And only you yourself should decide what to do because you are sensible and clever people. Good luck to you!
