The First Foot. A Wishing Tree.

Introduction:

G:-I say, Nick, do you like travelling?

B:- Actually I don`t. I can`t stand long train or air journeys with heavy luggage. (It`s better to stay at home and watch TV).

G:- Oh, I`ve heard you are interested in English? Why not buy a package tour to the USA?

B:- Oh, no, I`ve been there twice. What I need is new impressions.

G:- Then what about the UK, Scotland exactly? It`s the country of unusual traditions and celebrations.

B:- That`s a good idea to visit Scotland on Christmas Eve! To practice English and Scottish! The Scottish are highly gifted in the art of poetry and drama, they are the nation of dancers.

G:- Nick, you know nothing about Scotland. Shame on you. They don`t celebrate, so widely as the rest of Great Britain.

B:- Don`t they? But I thought….

G:- New Year and Hogmany are worth being watched by everyone. Imagine see and listen. We are in one of the Scottish families, you are welcome too.

Hogmany:

Mum: I think there is a lot of housework to do.

Daughter: No, mum. You are mistaken. The rooms are cleaned, the rubbish is threw away.

Mum: Really? Then is high time we laid the table. Bill, John, help us.

All: - Here are apple pies. How smell they. – Our favourite haggies. – Sweets, apples, juice!!!!!

Dad: Look at the clock and count. I`m ready to do my job (открывает дверь и говорит go away bad things, unhappiness, jealousy, illnesses открывает другую дверь и снова говорит come in, New Year with joy, happiness and good luck. Happy New Year, my dear!!!).

All: Happy New Year, Happy New Year! (все обнимаются)

First Foot: Knock, knock, knock…

Daughter: At last he has come. Mummy, I don`t want him to be reddish… He is black

haired, tall and very handsome…

First Foot: Happy New Year! I`ve brought you everything you wish. A piece of coal for warmth in your house, a coin for luck, a piece of bread, not to be hungry. And who will give me a kiss? A pretty young girl?

Mum: Please, close your eyes… Now, just now, wait a minute…

First Foot: You are as sly as foxes. A good joke, a good joke…

A wishes tree:

Dad: Do you remember the legend about a wishing tree?

Nick: What legend, I wonder?

Dad: The legend says that if you want your wish to come tree, go to the tree and drive a coin into the bark of it.

All: - Let`s go, let`s go! – Here we are at the last! – What a beautiful place! – How many coins are there! – They are different: old and new, big and small and even ancient!

Mum: Take your coins and wisper your wishes!

Daughter: I wish love this year!

Mum: I wish our granny recovered.

Dad: I wish happiness to our family.

Nick: I wish I had good marks in English!

Dad: I know there are similar legends in some countries. In Israel, for example, people go to a Crying Wall to ask for peace. In Saint Petersburg sick and disabled people ask Kseniya Peterburgzhskaya for health and recovery, love and happiness. They put their notes in the church and wait for a miracle.

Nick: A good tradition!!! So many countries, so many customs!

All: Our best wishes to all of you!
