Animals That Help People
People first learned about animals when they hunted them for their food – and when some of the animals hunted people for their food. One or the first steps toward civilization took place when early human beings and dogs became partners. The dog was probably the first domesticated animal. Early people used dogs to help hunt the animals they used for food. Later, people learned to tame the animals they liked to eat. About 8.500 years ago, cattle were domesticated in Europe, India, and the Middle East. In the Far East, the Tibetans domesticated the yak. In Lapland, a region in far northern Europe, the people had herds of tame reindeer. People who lived in South America tamed and herded the alpaca and the llama. Goats and sheep, like cattle, were first domesticated because their meat was good to eat. Later, people learned to use their fur, skin, and wool to make clothing and shelters. The horse also was first tamed for its meat. People then learned to ride tame horses, and used them to carry burdens and to pull loads. The pig was domesticated about 8000 years ago during the New Stone Age. The camel was tamed for riding and for pulling loads in Arabia and Babylonia. The donkey carried loads in northern Africa about 5000 years ago. The сat was tamed by the ancient Egyptians, who used it to protect their storehouses of grain from mice and rats.

THE DOMESTIC CAT

The domestic cat is a small, usually furry, domesticated, and carnivorous mammal. Cats are often valued by humans for companionship, and their ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Cats are animals, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. Cats can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small animals. They can see in darkness. Like most other mammals, cats have poorer color vision and a better sense of smell than humans. Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species, and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations (mewing, purring, hissing, and growling) as well as cat pheromones, and types of cat-specific body language. Since cats were cult animals in ancient Egypt, they were commonly believed to have been domesticated there, but there may have been instances of domestication as early as the Neolithic from around 9500 years ago (7500 BC). In comparison to dogs, cats have not undergone major changes during the domestication process, as the form and behavior of the domestic cat are not radically different from those of wildcats, and domestic cats are perfectly capable of surviving in the wild. This limited evolution during domestication means that domestic cats tend to interbreed freely with wild relatives. Cats are able to tolerate quite high temperatures: humans generally start to feel uncomfortable when their skin temperature passes about 38 C, but cats show no discomfort until their skin reaches around 52 C, and can tolerate temperatures of up to 56 C, if they have access to water.

There are many interesting and noble professions. A vet is one of them (из них).К is necessary to study a lot(мнoro) to become a good veterinary. This profession requires great patience and responsibility, because it deals with the health of wild and domestic animals. The main aim (цель) is to protect the health of animals, to provide medical prophylactic measures to prevent diseases of animals.
He must know: the hygiene of animals; how to feed animals; obstetrics and gynecology; the inner non-infectious diseases of cardiac and vascular system; breath system; digestive system;
diseases of stomach and bowels, liver and peritoneum; the urinary system; the nervous
system; the blood system; the disorder of metabolism; diseases of the young animals.
He must know the pharmacology (medicines), all about the poisoning of animals by different
herbs, food. The vet must know surgery, physical therapy, all the infectious diseases of animals and even the bases of the veterinary radiology.
As you see a vet must be a very clever, skillful and educated specialist. He must study a lot
of special subjects at the lyceum, have a practice to learn his profession practically.

The word "veterinary" means treating cattle. This is a Latin word. A vet is one of the most ancient professions in the world. People treat animals for a long time. People began to treat animals since that time when they made them domestic. The first vets appeared in tribes some thousand years ago. At that time people used some herbs for treating animals. Later on they were called the medicine plants. In Ancient states people understood that the profession of a vet was necessary. They valued such people very much. In Ancient Egypt there was the school "The HOUSE of LIFE". Together with other subjects the students there studied to treat animals. In ancient manuscripts there were the recipes of medicines for treating bulls, sheep, pigs, goats, geese. We can read the manuscript, one of the oldest text-books for a vet. It describes diseases of animals and methods of treating them. In Ancient Greece there were doctors for horses. They were called hippiators (гиппиатор). In India a vet was respected. Treating animals was a duty of a clergyman. Army needed vets too. During wars vets were with troops in battles. They treated horses, war elephants, camels. In the Rome troops there were hospitals for treating ill horses.People treated animals in Old Russia, too. The first mention about a vet you can read in Novgorod's book of the 15th century. In the 17th century there were stables where vets treated horses of tzar and tzar's family. The tzar Peter I gave an order to struggle with diseases of animals: horses, cows, pigs. Later on veterinary schools began to open; books about veterinary began to print.

A veterinarian is a doctor who takes care of animals, the way other doctor takes care of people. Thousands of veterinary surgeries for treating the animals are created nowadays. We can also find vets in zoological gardens. They treat such exotic animals as bears, seals, monkeys, snakes, lions, tigers, elephants, etc. Vets must know animal's habits diagnose the illnesses and give right prescriptions. Just think of some of the problems in keeping such creatures. For instance, monkeys have delicate health and can sometimes be very vicious. Lions are large and powerful, and can be very dangerous. Cute wild animal babies that might seem like wonderful house pets often become unmanageable, as they get older. The veterinarians in the zoos watch over animals' health, animals' feeding, inoculate the animals against infections. If the animal falls ill it must be lulled to sleep before the doctor enters the open-air cage or simple cage.
The animals should have fresh water available all the time.
Feed the animals the right food regularly on schedule.
Keep the animals clean.
Some animals need special homes. Keep them clean.
Some animals need help keeping themselves clean, too.
Most animals need exercise to keep themselves healthy and happy.
Many animals must be under observation of the veterinarian.
If the animal looks sick or injured the veterinarian must examine it.
Wild animals are much better off in their natural homes. There they have right climate, food, and an exercise to meet their needs. That's why the zoos workers try to improve animals' living conditions.

Dogs were the first pets that had the first job. They were put to work as guarders and herders. Their natural instincts made them perfect for these jobs. Dogs' wild ancestors lived in packs as wolves do today. The instinct to protect the pack, especially the younger wolves, was very strong. In the case of danger pack members began howl and bark. They alerted the other wolves about danger and warned the young wolves to hide for safety. Pet dogs naturally did the same for their human "pack". People trained the sheepdogs. They started early. At first the very young dog learns ten commands. The man made them up of words, whistles and hand signals. Then the dog must learn to control the sheep with its eyes. The dog can do stare so long and hard that people think the dog is hypnotizing fee sheep.Dogs and cats are meat eaters (carnivores). They hunt for their dinners, It didn't take humans a lot of time to use their pets' natural hunting abilities and put them to work. Cat had jobs as rat catchers. Some breeds of dogs, terriers for example, worked as rat catchers. Dogs' owners were so proud of their pets’ abilities to catch rats that they held contests. In one of the contests a famous champion named Billy killed 100 rate in five and a half minutes! In ancient times dogs were trained to go after big prey, such as deer and antelope. Some dogs still help their masters to hunt today. But it is usually only for sport interest.

Some people think pigeons use their sense of smell or their hearing. Some scientists discovered that pigeon's head contain a substance called magnetite. This magnetite may allow the pigeon to use the Earth's magnetite field as a navigational aid as if the pigeon has a built-in compass.

There are three forms of organization of veterinary business: state vet service, private vet service, and insurance vet business. The main functions of state vet service abroad are border guarding, vet sanitary inspectors.Training of specialists proceeded in more than 200 veterinary high educational establishments. 80% of them are situated in Europe and North America. These educational establishments as well as scientific-research institutes work out scientific problems of modern veterinary service. Common and regional questions are associated with preventive inspection and protective measures in the struggle with animals' diseases. Famous world -known scientists Alexander, Nikamura(Japan), Ramon(France), Manninger(Hungary), Neygen(USA), Rerer(German), Raffi(Iran), Garnem(Britain) make a valuable contribution to veterinary service.
There is international organization called World Veterinary Association. Russia joined it in 1928.
International Bureau of Epizootics was founded in 1924. It is executive organ of international service. 84 countries are the members of this organization including Russia. The main tasks of the Bureau are the following:1. To Encourage and to co-ordinate the research in the sphere of pathology and prophylaxis of animals' diseases.2 To collect and to disseminate the information deal with animals' diseases and protective measures.
3. To study the projects of vet sanitary inspectors.Regular sessions are held within the limits of International Bureau of Epizootics. They consider urgent problems of veterinary service. International Veterinary Congress is the general vet world forum.

You can find a veterinary service as a branch of medicine in Russia. "Code of Laws about veterinary" is a leading document. The laws were passed in 1933 in Russia. There are two directions of a veterinary service: practical and scientific. Practical veterinary carries out federal and regional programs of prophylaxes and liquidation of definite illnesses common for people and animals. State vet hospitals and private vets are the main institutions of practical veterinary. Scientific veterinary it is, first of all, educational establishments that graduate veterinary specialists. Veterinary science creates new medicines, vaccines, disinfectants, veterinary instruments, and equipment. It also works out diagnostics of animals' diseases. Scientific vet laboratories are engaged in elaboration and application of new modern methods of investigations.Vet Mass Media is improved too. There are о lot of veterinary newspapers and magazines in our country and abroad.Private vet's business is a new field of veterinary service. Nowadays we can address to private veterinary surgeon and get qualified medical help. Profession of veterinarian becomes popular and prestige in Russia.

Some people keep unusual animals as pets. Having an exotic pet might be fun. But you must think of the problems in keeping wild animals. People who choose more unusual pets often regret it. Most countries have laws that forbid people to keep wild animals as pets. If you crossed a snake with a fish you might end up with something like a moray eel. A full-grown moray can be longer then your arm. It lives in the water. And it's vicious, with sharp, fand-like teeth.
Moray eels may not sound like great pets to you - no fur, no purr, and no beauty - but one stole the heart of a Roman senator 2.000 years ago. Senator Crassus so loved his pet moray that he gave it a pearl necklace and earrings. How the earrings stayed on is a mystery: eels don't have earlobes. The senator claimed that his beloved pet returned his love and would even eat out of his hands. When the eel died, the senator had a lavish and expensive funeral for it.

The word "veterinary" means treating cattle. This is a Latin word. A vet is one of the most ancient professions in the world. People treat animals for a long time. People began to treat animals since that time when they made them domestic. The first vets appeared in tribes some thousand years ago. At that time people used some herbs for treating animals. Later on they were called the medicine plants. In Ancient states people understood that the profession of a vet was necessary. They valued such people very much. In Ancient Egypt there was the school "The HOUSE of LIFE". Together with other subjects the students there studied to treat animals. In ancient manuscripts there were the recipes of medicines for treating bulls, sheep, pigs, goats, geese. We can read the manuscript, one of the oldest text-books for a vet. It describes diseases of animals and methods of treating them. In Ancient Greece there were doctors for horses. They were called hippiators (гиппиатор). In India a vet was respected. Treating animals was a duty of a clergyman. Army needed vets too. During wars vets were with troops in battles. They treated horses, war elephants, camels. In the Rome troops there were hospitals for treating ill horses.People treated animals in Old Russia, too. The first mention about a vet you can read in Novgorod's book of the 15th century. In the 17th century there were stables where vets treated horses of tzar and tzar's family. The tzar Peter I gave an order to struggle with diseases of animals: horses, cows, pigs. Later on veterinary schools began to open; books about veterinary began to print.

Dogs were the first pets that had the first job. They were put to work as guarders and herders. Their natural instincts made them perfect for these jobs. Dogs' wild ancestors lived in packs as wolves do today. The instinct to protect the pack, especially the younger wolves, was very strong. In the case of danger pack members began howl and bark. They alerted the other wolves about danger and warned the young wolves to hide for safety. Pet dogs naturally did the same for their human "pack". People trained the sheepdogs. They started early. At first the very young dog learns ten commands. The man made them up of words, whistles and hand signals. Then the dog must learn to control the sheep with its eyes. The dog can do stare so long and hard that people think the dog is hypnotizing fee sheep.Dogs and cats are meat eaters (carnivores). They hunt for their dinners, It didn't take humans a lot of time to use their pets' natural hunting abilities and put them to work. Cat had jobs as rat catchers. Some breeds of dogs, terriers for example, worked as rat catchers. Dogs' owners were so proud of their pets’ abilities to catch rats that they held contests. In one of the contests a famous champion named Billy killed 100 rate in five and a half minutes! In ancient times dogs were trained to go after big prey, such as deer and antelope. Some dogs still help their masters to hunt today. But it is usually only for sport interest.

Аннотация
Фонд оценочных средств в форме дифференцированного зачёта по учебной дисциплине ОГСЭ.03 Иностранный язык для обучающихся очной формы обучения по специальности 36.02.01 Ветеринария.
Место учебной дисциплины в структуре основной профессиональной образовательной программы: дисциплина входит в гуманитарный и социально-экономический цикл.
Цели и задачи учебной дисциплины – требования к результатам освоения дисциплины:
В результате освоения учебной дисциплины обучающийся должен знать:
- лексический (1400 лексических единиц) и грамматический минимум необходимый для чтения и перевода (со словарем) иностранных текстов профессиональной направленности;
- соответствующие речевые формы и ключевые слова;
- правила оформления ряда документов;
- причины коммуникативных неудач;
- типологию речевых ошибок, вызванных отклонением от литературных норм;
- изобразительно-выразительные средства речи;
- составляющие компоненты иностранной речи;
- специфику устной и письменной речи;
- готовить проекты, презентации на иностранном языке;
В результате освоения дисциплины обучающийся должен уметь:
- уметь строить монологические и диалогические высказывания с учетом специфики иностранного языка- общаться (устно и письменно) на иностранном языке на профессиональные и повседневные темы.
- переводить (со словарем) иностранные тексты профессиональной направленности;
- самостоятельно совершенствовать устную и письменную речь, пополнять словарный запас.
Пакет заданий разработан на основе рабочей программы дисциплины и включает вопросы по следующим грамматическим разделам:

Проверочные задания дают возможность выявить знания и умения студентов по грамматике иностранного языка, определить качество подготовки, а также выделить основные вопросы, на которые необходимо обратить внимание при дальнейшем изучении дисциплины.
