A Lesson on Adjectives or Adverbs

On a Monday, I like to ask my students what they did on their day off. Usually, being that it is a Monday, they don’t want to say very much. They might say, ‘I went to the village’ or ‘I walked with my friends.’ To increase their oral speech, I like to teach words and phrases that allow them to describe what they did.

When I write lesson plans, I use the P1, P2, P3 approach. P1 is the teacher’s presentation of the lesson material. P2 represents the section lesson with the teacher helping the students to use the material. P3 is the student’s independent production of the material. This could be a dialogue or a game that shows the students can produce the material on their own.

Here is my lesson plan:

Objective: The students will be able to use 10 new adjectives/adverbs in a written story about their walk in the park.

Materials prepared by the teachers: Sets of flashcards with 10 adjectives/adverbs, chalk

Length of the Lesson: 50 minutes

Warm-Up: Tongue Twister- Sue sells seas shells by the sea shore. Does Sue sell sea shells by the sea shore? Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. 5 minutes

P1: The teacher introduces the 10 new words to the students:

* excited/excitedly

* happy/happily

* tearful/tearfully

* embarrassed/embarrassedly

* quick/quickly

* graceful/gracefully

* clumsy/clumsily

* slow/slowly

* sad/sadly

* calm/calmly

In P1, the teacher can show these words by acting them out for the student, using them in a sentence, and only if the students don’t understand, translate them into Russian or Kazakh.

This should take about 10 minutes.

P2: The teacher assists the students in exercises that practice the new words. (each activity should take about 10-15 minutes).

  • Dancing Adverbs: Divide the class into groups of 5-7. Give each group a set of the ten flashcards. Tell them that they are to act out the word by dancing. They do not say the word, only dance the word. The other groups are to watch and tell which word is being acted out. At first, students are nervous and don’t want to. Choose a student who is outgoing and likes to make other laugh. He or she can be the first. After this, all the students want to play the game.

  • Blackboard Race: Put an equal amount of chairs 2-3 meters from the blackboard as you have groups (3 groups, 3 chairs). The teacher will show one adjective/adverb. The students must run to the board and write if the word is an adjective or adverb and a sentence (with correct grammar). Tell the student that it’s not who’s the fastest, but who is the most careful with grammar. The other students cannot write, but can help by suggesting answers.

P3: For the last 15 minutes, the students write a story using all the adjectives/adverbs about their walk in the park. Tell them to be creative, this need not be true. At the end of the lesson, have them read their story for the class.

Homework: Using all ten words, the students are to write a dialog between an American student, a Kazakh student, and a German student. If the students have trouble with this idea, give them a situation that the different students are in, and how they will each act differently according to their culture.
