Body Paragraphs

The body paragraph forms the main part of the essay and is where arguments, ideas, and descriptions are laid out. The main parts include:

1. Topic sentence
2. Supporting sentences
3. Conclusion and/or transition sentence

Topic sentences:

1. Should be general and ideally kept to about 8–15 words
2. Express the idea of what the paragraph will be about
3. Match the roadmap from the introduction

Supporting sentences:

1. Add detail to and strengthen the idea mentioned in the topic sentence
2. Examples, explanations, and reasons should be included in this section
3. Ask the questions “Is this sentence connected to the other sentences in the paragraph?” and “Does this sentence fit logically into the paragraph?”

Conclusion

The conclusion sums up the essay and reminds the reader what the writer wants to say. New information should not be introduced in this section. The main points covered in the essay are reviewed – but not discussed – in this section. A “future sentence” is the last sentence in the essay and keeps the reader thinking about what might come next.

A recommended format is to simply begin with “In conclusion,...”
