Brexit means British Exit from the European Union (the EU).
This topic is too huge to cover in one blog, so for now here are 3 idioms that sum up feelings about the vote to leave.
1. A leap in the dark means something you do without knowing what will happen as a result.
Example: Leaving the EU will be a leap in the dark for the UK and is likely to cause years of economic, political and social turmoil.
2. Out of the frying pan into the fire means to move from a difficult situation to one that is much worse.
Example: Many people are dissatisfied with some aspects of the EU, but the best way forward is to continue cooperating, and to press for reform as a member of the EU. Leaving the EU altogether is just out of the frying pan into the fire.
3. You can’t have your cake and eat it means you cannot have the benefits of something without some sacrifice or cost.
Example: British “Vote Leave” campaigners want to have their cake and eat it. They say that Britain can have all the benefits of EU membership without any of the responsibilities.
