My Bashkortostan

I live in Bashkortostan. The Republic of Bashkortostan is located on the border of Europe and Asia and inhabited by peoples of more than a hundred nationalities: Bashkirs, Russians, Tatars, Chuvashs, Ukrainians, Germans and others.

The first mention of the words "Bashkiria" and "Bashkirs" dates back to written documents of the 10^th century. In 1557 Bashkiria joined Russia voluntarily.

The climate of Bashkortostan is continental with cold winters and warm, sometimes hot summers. There are wonderful woodlands and lakes, rivers, steppes and valleys, hills and mountains.

There are more than 600 rivers and 800 lakes in Bashkortostan. The biggest rivers are the Belaya or the Agidel, the Karaidel, the Eyek, the Yurizan and others. Bashkortostan is rich in beautiful lakes. There are the Aslykul, the Kandrakul and others.

In the south of Bashkortastan there are the Ural Mountains. The most famous hills are Yamantau, Iremel, Yangantau and certainly our Shihan.

Bashkortostan gave the world a large number of famous people. Among them the national poet Mustai Karim, the Russian opera legend F. Shalyapin, a ballet dancer R. Nuriyev, some modern pop and rock singers and groups known all over the country and abroad.
