Slantsy

Slantsevsky district is located in the southwest of the Leningrad region. Slantsy is a town and the administrative center of Slantsevsky District. It is located on the Plyussa River, 192 kilometers west of St. Petersburg. Slantsy is one of the youngest cities in the Leningrad region: it was founded in 1930 as a work settlement by Sergey Kirov, when a large oil shale deposit was discovered in the region. The town's name is the Russian word for shale. Since 1949 Slantsy has been given the status of the town. Since 1993 there is Russia's state border with the Republic of Estonia on the territory of Slantsy district (the river Narva). For the short history Slantsy has passed a nice way from the small working settlement to the modern industrial city. The population of Slantsy on the first of January, 2016 was 43599. About 33 thousand people live in town and more than 10 thousand people live in rural settlements (Выскатское, Гостицкое, Загривское, Новосельское, Старопольское and Черновское). The economically active population of the district at the beginning of 2015 is 25 thousand people. The main part of the working population in Slantsy is employed in the chemical processing industry and at the enterprises of small and medium business in sphere of trade and services. Nowadays Slantsy is well-planned, cozy town, attractive to housing, which has in its arsenal a well-developed infrastructure and modern developing industry (including 2 new plants: on production of a gas concrete (газобетон) and cement - the first cement plant in the territory of the Russian Federation constructed after collapse of the USSR). Slantsevsky Cement plant Tsesla is one of the largest concrete plants in Russia’s North-West; it is part of the international concrete producing Heidelberg Cement Group. Polimer is the only company in the entire North-West producing noise- and vibration-attenuating rubber parts used in the reconstruction of railroad bed. The company has a large capacity for tyre recycling. There are 505 organizations and 1221 individual entrepreneurs (антэпренёз) in Slantsevsky District. Also there are two municipal programs of support and development of small and medium business and beginning entrepreneurs. These programs have provided such types of a financial support as provision of concessional loans and the provision of "starting benefits" to the beginning entrepreneurs. For example, last year 5 beginning entrepreneurs got the support in a type of "starting benefits" for a total amount of 1million 422 thousand rubles. Concessional loans were granted on the amount of 12 million 510 thousand rubles, 33 projects are financed, 87 workplaces are created. In 2015, Slantsevsky municipal district took the first place in the regional competition "the Best municipal district of Leningrad region on implementation of powers in the sphere of development and support of small and medium business".

Agriculture. Agriculture is the main occupation of the population of Slantsevsky district living outside the town and a significant component of the economy of the district. Nowadays in agriculture work stable 3 enterprises: "Rodina", "Os'minskaya", "Slantsy". The main focus of their activities is dairy farming. The number of employees at these enterprises is 396 people, the average monthly salary for the year amounted to 25 thousand 400 rubles. Country farms are also developed in the territory of Slantsevsky district. For the first time in 2015 2 farmers from the Staropolye rural settlement have got a grant from the regional budget on creation of a country farm.

Investments. Enterprises and organizations of all types of economic activity invested nearly 998 million rubles in 2015. Budget investments have increased that is connected with the construction of a new kindergarten, the cost of which amounted to about 300 million rubles. It was opened on the 9th of April, 2016 in Luchki. There are 220 places for children in it. Ekorusmetall has finished the construction of a modern plant for processing waste batteries in 2015. This year the construction of the sports complex in the territory of the sports ground of school No. 3 and the sports ground on the place of the unfinished construction pool in Griboedov Street continues. Works on capital repairs of the sports ground in the territory of school No. 2 are performed. There was also built a sports ground in the territory of Vyskatskaya school.

Perspective investment projects: 1. Creation of industrial park AGROTEKHENERGO Management Company. The aim of the project is the creation of the industrial park for potential productions. 2. Reconstruction of Slantsevsky Cement plant Tsesla. The project aim is to increase production volume of the plant through the modernization of existing production due to construction of the new line of clinker production.through the construction of new line for clinker production. 3. The production of oil shale. The aim of the project is the resumption of extraction and processing of oil shale with the aim of obtaining marketable products. 4. Development of production of Peterburgtsement.

The administration of Slantsevsky district is interested in involvement of new investors. There are available free areas for production placement in the territory of Slantsy. For creation of agricultural enterprises and objects of tourism the district has a large number of lands.

Education and sport. The education system of Slantsevsky district gives possibilities for training and realization of every child and teenager. For this purpose there are 13 preschool educational institutions (kindergartens) (9 city and 4 rural) and 10 schools (4 city schools of full education and 6 rural schools) in Slantsevsky district. There are also children's and youth sports school, children's music school, children's art school, an art center, an information technology center and Slantsevsky psychological-pedagogical centre. All additional education in our town is free. The special attention is traditionally paid to sport in Slantsy. There are two stadiums "the Chemist" and "the Miner"), two swimming pools, twenty gyms, a lot of fitness centers and hand-gun ranges. Great trainers work in Slantsy, who trained outstanding athletes and chess players such as

Evgenia Ovod (the international grandmaster of chess, the world champion of 2004 among students in Istanbul), Aleksey Dmitrik (the world class sport master, the numerous champion and the prize-winner of championship of the country on high jumps, the world champion among juniors in 2001, the silver prize-winner of the European championship among juniors in 2003, the winner of the European cup in 2005, the silver prize-winner of the World Cup in 2011, the silver prize-winner of the European championship in 2009), Andrey Alexeev (the four-time champion of the country on high jumps, the numerous participant and the prize-winner of a world championship and the championship of Europe among juniors), Ilona Grigoryan (the prize-winner of the championship of Russia on hand-to-hand fight among women), Alexander Klypin (the champion of Russia in hand-to-hand fight).

Culture. Slantsy is rich in its cultural traditions. For the needs of the residents there are two houses of culture, Central district library, open Park of culture and rest. The chorus of the Russian song "Kindness", studio of the variety dance "Alice", ensemble of the ballroom dance "Spark", vocal ensemble "Caprice", youth theater "Bums" are very popular here. These collectives have a rank "national" and "exemplary". Such high rank is also given to five teams of the Palace of culture "Plant Slantsy": to chorus of the Russian song, chorus of veterans of war and work, the dance group "Mozaika", the drama theatre and the puppet theatre. Workers of the Central district library are always glad to each visitor. Here we can see interesting books (there are 200 thousand books in the library), exhibitions, discussions, movies and access to the Internet. The Slantsy Museum of History and Culture, focusing on the history of Slantsy, is the only state museum in Slantsevsky District.

Sights. There are several churches, monuments of architecture and religious architecture on the territory of Slantsevsky district. First of all it is the Church of Archangel Michael in the village Signo (built between 1690 and 1700), the Church of St. George in the village Lozhgolovo (architect A. Komarov, 1835) and the Church of the Nativity in the village Staropolye (the end of the 19th century). There are also such objects of cult appointment as the Stone Cross in the village of Lozhgolovo and Holguin Cross which is situated on the place of one of the most ancient churchyards of the Northwest of Russia (it is destroyed during the great Patriotic War, now there is a metal memorial cross there). A great interest for tourists and pilgrims represents the Uspensky complex on the river Long. It is a distant monastery, a habitat of hermits in artificial caves with a legendary stone with a trace of a human foot on the place of ancient settlement Dolozhsk.

The combination of old monuments and modern industrial architecture creates the necessary preconditions for tourism development in Slantsevsky district. Residents are always glad to see guests!
