The begining   The Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, Greece. The Games were part of a religious festival. The Greek Olympics inspired the modern Olympic Games (begun in 1896). The Games were held in honour of Zeus, king of the gods, and were staged every four years at Olympia. People from all over the Greek world came to watch and take part.

  At that time, Europe was divided by wars. Coubertin thought that the Olympic Games could help to bring peace. He thought highly of sport.

Five rings   In 1913, Coubertin found an emblem of five linked rings. They became a symbol of the Olympic Games. These five rings represent five parts of the world: Europe, America, Australia, Africa, Asia.
