Ход урока.

  1. Организационный момент. Начало урока.

Teacher: Hello pupils! I’m glad to see you! How are you today?

  1. Введение в тему урока.

Teacher: - Do you like travelling?

I think everybody likes travelling.

What countries have you visited?

What is your favourite form of transport?

What is the fastest transport?

Have you ever travelled by plane?

Was it a good journey?

Today we are going to make an imaginary trip on a plane to a wonderful country situated on a green continent. But before I’d like you to look at the blackboard and guess what all these celebrities (=famous people) have in common.

На доске: изображения знаменитостей из Австралии – Николь Кидман, Кайли Миноуг, Кейт Бланшетт, Хит Леджер, Стив Ирвинг, Мел Гибсон, Миранда Керр.

Pupils: They are from Australia.

Teacher: You’re absolutely right. So, today we are going to visit Australia, a land down under. Why do you think people call it “the land down under”?

Pupils: They call Australia “the land down under” because it is situated in the Southern Hemisphere. They have summer when we have winter.

Teacher: Right. We often say Land Down Under, Aussieland, Kangarooland, the Lucky Country and the Land of Wattle (Все названия записаны на доске). So many names Australia has!

The aim of our lesson is to get as much information about Australia as possible.

  1. Фонетическая зарядка.

Teacher: Before leaving Minsk and starting to Australia we have to go to the check-in in our Minsk national airport. Take the cards with the words. You have to read all the words correctly. Only after that you’ll get your tickets to the plane.

Карточка №1.

Repeat the words:

Australia, marsupial, aborigines, kangaroo, koala, bushwalking, dingo, emu, echidna, possum, platypus, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, wildlife, multicultural, natives, southern hemisphere, desert, species, settlement, Great Barrier Reef, souvenir, unique, island.

Teacher: Great! Now you all have your tickets to Australia. But our journey will take a lot of time and it won’t be easy. There will be a lot of different tasks. We are to do our best and work hard. You should be active and polite. Are you ready for the journey?

  1. Презентация. Общие сведения про Австралию.

У каждого ученика на парте – карта Австралии (приложение №1).

Teacher: (слайд №1) What do you know about Australia? (слайд №2,3) If you look at the map of the world, you’ll see that Australia is the biggest island in the world and its smallest continent. In fact, it’s only a little smaller than the USA and 30 times bigger than Great Britain! Australia is washed by two oceans – Indian and Pacific. Its area is about 8 million square kilometers.

(слайд №4) Who are the natives of Australia: Indians or Aborigines?

Pupils: Aborigines.

Teacher: Right. (слайд №5) The Aborigines are the Australian natives that had been living there for thousands of years before the first Europeans came to Australia.

Do you know who discovered Australia? (слайд №6)

Pupils: Captain James Cook discovered Australia in 1770, but the first European visitors were the Dutch. They settled there in 1616. (слайд №7)

Teacher: How many states and territories are there in Australia? (слайд №8)

Pupils: There are six states and two territories on the continent.

Teacher: Correct! (слайд №9) There are six states and two territories in Australia. Each state has its own government and its own capital city. The population of Australia is about 20 million people. It’s a multicultural country.

What do you know about the climate of Australia? Is it the same as in Belarus? (слайд №10)

Pupils: No, it’s not the same. Australian’s climate varies. The greater part of the continent is desert or semi-arid. Only the south-east and south-west have a temperate climate.

Teacher: (слайд №11) The climate of Australia is mild in the south, hot and wet in the north and dry in the centre. Although there are some mountains along the east coast, the centre of the country is very flat. You can drive for hundreds of kilometers through the great deserts of Western Australia along roads that never seem to go up or down. There are great salt lakes and strange rocks that stand out of the flat desert floor.

Do you know what Uluru is? (слайд №12)

Pupils: It’s the world’s famous rock.

Teacher: Yes, (слайд №13) it’s the largest piece of rock in the world, famous as Ayers Rock. It’s red, it is 335 meters high and you can see it from many kilometers away. Native Australians call it Uluru and believe it is holy – there is magic there! As you can see in the picture, William and Kate know about it!

What is Australia famous for? (слайд №14)

Pupils: It is famous for gold mining, sheep growing and cattle farming.

Teacher: Right, Australia is famous for gold mining, wheat and fruit growing, sheep and cattle farming and the production of minerals, oil, wool, meat and sugar. (слайд №15)

Pupils: It’s Canberra.

Teacher: Absolutely right. (слайд №17) Canberra is the capital city of the country. The population of the capital is over 300 000 people who live in an area with around 12 million trees.

What do you think Canberra means in the local language? (слайд №18)

  3. A meeting place

  4. A public place

Pupils: A meeting place.

Во время просмотра презентации ученики смотрят два коротких видео о животных.

Teacher: What is the largest living thing on Earth? Is it a whale or maybe, an elephant? No! What is it?

Pupils: The Great Barrier Reef.

Teacher: (слайды №31-33) Right. It is bigger than the Great Wall of China and it can be seen from space. It’s the world’s largest coral reef and the world’s biggest single structure made by living organisms. The coral reef consists of over 2500 individual reefs and 900 islands.
