3. Reading the text about the history of St Valentine’s Day and working with it. (15 minutes)

Teacher: Do you know the history of this holiday? Do you know how it all started? Let’s read a short story about it.

St Valentine’s Day
Many many years ago, in old Rome there was a king named Claudius. Claudius was a very cruel king. He did not like to see people happy and was always starting wars with other countries.

In the same city, there lived a kind priest named Valentine. He loved to see young people in love. Love was the best thing that could happen to two people, and when couples came to him and asked him to marry them, it was a time for great festivities.

Claudius did not like to see people get married, for that meant that when a war came, his soldiers did not want to leave their wives and children. Young soldiers did not want to leave their sweethearts. So the king, being the cruel man banned all marriages and made it illegal for anyone to become engaged.

Father Valentine was very upset at this, and he performed weddings in secrecy. Claudius heard that Father Valentine was still performing marriages and ordered his guards to go and arrest the priest. The good Father was taken and thrown into the prison! While he was in the prison, Father Valentine learned that the jail-keepers daughter was blind and sent for her. He touched her brow and she was immediately granted her sight. It was a miracle!

When the cruel King Claudius, learned of this miracle, he thought it was witchcraft and immediately ordered that Father Valentine's head be chopped off!

On the morning of the execution, February 14, of the year 270, the priest sent a letter to the jail-keepers daughter, whom he had fallen in love with. He signed the letter "From your Valentine". That is why we sign our Valentine's Day cards the way we do today.

On St Valentine’s Day people give each other red roses, because a red rose is a symbol of love. People also give each other chocolates in red boxes that look like hearts.

cruel – жестокий
priest – священник
illegal – незаконный
to get engage – быть помолвленным
jail – тюрьма
blind – слепой
miracle – чудо
witchcraft - колдовство
execution – казнь

Teacher: I hope you liked the text. Now let’s see how well you understood the text.

2. What date is St Valentine’s Day?
3. When St Valentine was in prison, who did he fall in love with?

5. According to the popular belief, why was St Valentine beheaded?
6. What colour is associated with St Valentine’s Day?
7. Which are the most popular flowers given on St Valentine’s Day?

4. Watching a video. (3 minutes)

(you can find the video here https://youtu.be/CaRgHQjC1WE )

From early morn to set of sun.

Приложение:

Happy Valentine’s Day

Be my Valentine,
And you’ll never walk alone.
My heart will protect you,
And my arms will be your home
As my Valentine, I just cannot
Shower you with diamonds or gold;
I cannot promise you an easy life
Or prevent you from growing old.
But I can offer you complete devotion;

And keep you from heartache and sorrow;
I’ll be there for you each day
And still there each tomorrow.

Your Name

I wrote your name in the sky,
but the wind blew it away.
I wrote your name in the sand,
but the waves washed it away.
I wrote your name in my heart,
and forever it will stay.

~Jessica Blade

Valentine Poem
5 little valentines just for you
The first one says, “My love is true.”
The second one says, “You have my heart.”
The third one says, “Let us never part.”
The fourth one says, “Won’t you please be mine?”
The fifth one says, “‘Til the end of time.”

Best Friends Forever
Friends are clever,
Friends are true,
Best Friends forever–
Me and You!
Be Mine!

A Special Friend
A special friend
is by your side
During long classes and
late bus rides.
A special friend
has a laugh to share
when it seems that
no one else is there.
A special friend
is always true.
My pick for a Valentine
is someone like
you!

Five little hearts
Five little hearts in a row
The first one said
I love you so
The second one said
Will you be my Valentine
The third one said
I will, if you’ll be mine
The four one said
I’ll always be your friend
The fifth one said
until the very end.
