Вступ

Sport is probably as old as the humanity itself. It has been developing with the developing and growing of the mankind. All over the world people of different ages are very fond of sports and games. Sport not only helps people to become strong and to develop physically but also makes them more organized and better disciplined in their daily activities. Sport helps people to keep in good health.

Sport is very important in our life. It’s popular among young and old people. Many people do morning exercises, jog in the morning, train themselves in fitness clubs and gyms, and take part in sport competitions.

Other people like sports too, but they only watch sport competitions, listen to sports news. They prefer reading interesting articles about sportsmen and sport events, but they don’t go in for sports.

Physical training is an important subject at school. Pupils have got physical training lessons twice a week. There are sports grounds and stadiums near many schools and school-children go in for sports outdoors. A lot of different competitions are held at schools, a great number of pupils take part in them. All participants try to get good results and become winners.

There are summer and winter kinds of sports. The summer kinds of sports are, for example, swimming, athletics, football, volleyball, basketball and others. The winter kinds of sports are, for example, figure skating, skiing, ice hockey etc.

We all need to do exercises. Regular exercises give you more energy and make you feel and look better.

Among the popular sports in our country are football, basketball, swimming, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, figure skating and others. You can choose a sport for any season and for any taste.

TEXT «The Olympic Games»

The Olympic Games have always included a number of ceremonies, many of which emphasize the themes of international friendship and peaceful cooperation. The opening ceremony has always included the parade of nations, in which the teams from each nation enter the main stadium as part of a procession. The Greek team always enters first, to commemorate the ancient origins of the modern Games, and the team of the host nation always enters last. The opening ceremony has evolved over the years into a complex extravaganza, with music, speeches and pageantry.

It is eagerly anticipated and well attended. The torch relay, in which the Olympic Flame symbolizes the transmission of Olympic ideals from ancient Greece to the modern world, was introduced as part of the opening ceremony at the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, Germany. In the relay the torch is lit in Olympia, Greece, and is carried over several weeks or months from there to the host city by a series of runners. After the last runner has lit the Olympic Flame in the main Olympic stadium, the host country’s head of state declares the Games officially open, and doves are released to symbolize the hope of world peace.

Two other important ceremonial innovations had appeared earlier at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The Olympic Flag, with its five interlocking rings of different colors against a white background, was flown for the first time. The five rings represent unity among the nations of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Another innovation occurring in 1920 was the first reciting of the Olympic Oath, taken in the name of all the athletes by a member of the host’s team. The oath asserts the athletes’ commitment to the ideals of sportsmanship in competition.

At the end of the 1956 Summer Games in Melbourne, Australia, however, the athletes broke ranks and mingled together to celebrate the occasion. This custom was continued in subsequent Games. After the athletes join in the main Olympic stadium in celebration, the president of the IOC invites the athletes and spectators to meet again at the site of the next Games. The IOC president then declares the Games ended, and the Olympic Flame is extinguished.

Висновок

Sports play an important part in our life as our state of health depends on it. It’s popular among both children and grown-ups. The sport helps to bring up physically strong, courageous, strong-willed and energetic people.

People who are interested in sports can be roughly divided into two following groups: those who like doing sports and those who prefer watching sport events or competitions. The first group includes people who prefer to take part in competitions, do morning exercises regularly and train themselves in different clubs and sections. The second group is more numerous and consists of people who like just watching competitions and sports games, listening to sports news and interesting stories about sportsmen. They do not go in for sports.

  1. My name is Marco and I’m 16 years old. I’m Italian and my favourite sport is soccer. I play soccer twice a week at school and in the afternoon I have soccer lessons on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Saturdays afternoon I usually have a match with my team, we are very good at soccer and we often win. Of course I’m in the school team too! I have a lot of friends and on Sundays afternoon we play soccer in the park. My favourite team is Milan and I hope to be a champion as Paolo Maldini.

  2. Hello, my name is Timothy and I’m American. I’m 15 years old and I’m fondof basket. Here in the USA it is one of the national sports. Every family has a basket in the garden and you can see lots of boys and girls playing in theparks. I play basket every afternoon with my friends and on Sundays morningI play in the garden with my father and my brother. I’m in the school team and every month we have a match against other teams; we have won 4 matchesout of 6. My favourite player is Michael Jordan.

  3. I’m Simon and I live in England. I’m 15 years old and I practice cycling. I like this sport because I can practice it in the parks. In the summer I go cycling every day for three hours, usually in the morning. In winter it’s difficult to go cycling because it often rains. I always wear an helmet to protect my head and drink a lot of water. My parents are also fond of cycling, so we often go on holiday by bike. Last year we went in Scotland by bicycle, it was fantastic!
