TALKING ABOUT ABILITY

• CAN expresses ability in the present and future.
• COULD expresses ability in the past.
• E.g. He could climb up the mountains before he had an accident. He can’t climb mountains now .
• We also use could with verbs of perception, like see, smell, hear, taste, feel, understand etc.
• E.g. She could hear a noise coming from the dining room.

CAN

• Be able to is used to talk about ability in all other tenses .
• E.g. Were you able to read when you were 5 years old? ( general ability in the past)
• Could you read when you were 5?( general ability in the past)
• Will you able to join our conference at 5 p.m? ( future arrangements)
• In the future all people will be able to speak English.

( ability in the future )

BE ABLE TO

• Manage to do sth means to do something, especially something difficult.
• E.g. Did you manage to write an essay by 6 o’clock?
• A small dog somehow managed to survive the fire.
• We managed to come home before 9 o’clock(before curfew).
• How did you manage to get a badge during the stage of emergency?

MANAGE TO DO

• If you succeed in doing something, you achieve something that you have been planning to, and, it has the results that you wanted.
• E.g. Ainazik and Sezim succeeded in getting full scholarship to UNIST.
• Iryskeldi succeeded in getting high score in TOEFL.
