New Year
In Russia people celebrate New Year on the first of January since 1700.
They decorate a Christmas tree and their houses.
Also Russians cook a big meal.
In Great Britain New Year is not so important as in Russia.
This holiday is always celebrated in Scotland and it’s called «Hogmanay».
The main symbol of Hogmanay is the fire.
You can see a lot of fireworks and illuminations on the streets on this day.
The most famous New Year tradition is the custom of «First footing»
Christmas
In Russia people celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January.
But in Great Britain people celebrate Christmas on the 25 th of December.
St. Valentine’s Day
This Day is named after St. Valentine, a priest, who married lovers.
On this Day people in both countries give flowers, sweets, cards to their dearest and nearest.
Maslenitsa and Pancake Day
On Maslenitsa Russians cook pancakes.
People dress a scarecrow…
… and then they burn it at the end of Maslenitsa week.
In Great Britain there are some competitions on the Pancake Day.
Mother’s Day
In Russia this Day is not so popular as the International Women’s Day.
Children give to their mothers presents that they make by themselves.
In Great Britain on this Day children give to their mothers flowers and do the housework.
April Fools’ Day
In both countries people make fun all day.
Easter
In Great Britain and in Russia Easter is one of the most important holidays in the year.
Labor Day
Labor Day in Russia.
