Is it really frowned upon in the US to use knife and fork? Find the answer below: Sometimes, it the little things that lead to misunderstandings and annoyance on both sides. We compiled a list of the most important information concerning manners so you can avoid all those little mistakes.
What do I do when I’m stopped by the police?
Under no circumstances get out of your car, that can be extremely dangerous. Panicked rummaging in your purse or the glove compartment might make the police officer think you are reaching for a gun. So, best keep your hands on the wheel and don’t move until the policeman is at your car window.
Can I just sit down at any table in a restaurant?
No, in American restaurants guests waits until they are given a table. That is why often a big sign next to the door says “wait to be seated!” A major faux pas: sitting down at a table with other guests.
How much do I tip?
Do not just bring the bill up to a round figure in the restaurant or cab. That would make you really unpopular. Wages in those sectors are very low – waiters and taxi drivers live off the customers’ tips. So in a restaurant, 15 to 20 percent is appropriate, for a taxi 10 to 15 percent.
Do Americans shake hands?
Usually, Americans only shake hands in a business context, on formal occasions, or when they are first meeting. Conservative men even wait until women shake their hands, or, in business life, their superior. Friends and good acquaintances greet each other with a hug – in all other cases a friendly “Hi, how are you?” is sufficient.
How do I politely ask where the toilet is?
Better don’t use the word “toilet,” this is usually regarded as a rather vulgar term. In public buildings the correct expression is “restroom” or even “Lady’s room” or “Men’s room,” in private households, ask for the bathroom.
Are Americans really prudes?
Yes, that is not a stereotype, it is true. If you don’t want any trouble with the police, better not take off your bikini top at a public beach. Even in the changing room Americans do not like to be naked – who gets undressed completely chooses a single cubicle. Even little children may not be seen naked in public. From an American point of view, it is highly indecent to let children run around unclothed – even on the beach or the swimming pool – in public.
Is it okay to cut in line?
Cutting lines is a big taboo in America. In order to nip impatience in the bud, the lines in front of offices, amusement parks, or the supermarket are organized in a way that keeps them moving constantly and makes it impossible to see the beginning. Impossible to cut in line there.
Is it really frowned upon in the US to use knife and fork?
That’s correct! Using knife and fork at the same time is regarded as impolite in the US. That’s why Americans cut their meat, put the knife aside, place one hand on your lap and eat with the fork. Potatoes, vegetables etc are cut with the fork.
Do I generally have to introduce anyone who’s with me?
Yes. Even if you’re just talking with your neighbor on the street or meet someone you know in the supermarket, it is customary to introduce anyone who’s with you. Not doing it will be regarded as being very impolite.
