School in Great Britain

English children begin to go to school at the age of five. First they attend infant school, where pupils learn to read, to write and to count.

At the age of 7 – 11 years old children go to junior school¹. Here pupils study English, Arithmetic, History, Geography, Nature Study, Music, Art and Religion. After finishing infant school² children do the tests and then pupils are divided into three “streams” – A, B and C according to their knowledge. The brightest children go to the A-stream.

Pupils write their Eleven Plus Examinations at the end of the fourth year in junior school. In September they begin to study in secondary school. Pupils are divided into classes according to their abilities³.

There are many private schools in Great Britain, some of them are only for boys and only for girls. Parents have to pay high fees for education of their kids in such schools. It is easier to enter Oxford and Cambridge universities after graduating from private schools. One of the oldest paid schools is Eton College.
