«Контрольная работа по английскому языку (чтение) в 10 классе.»

Mr. Lewis, who lived in one of the suburbs of London, was on his way home. It was very late, and he was alone on the dark road.

Suddenly he heard a strange noise behind him. He realized somebody was there and he had an unpleasant feeling that the man was following him. He began to walk faster. The man behind him began walking faster too. He walked slower, and the man moved slower too. He started running, but the man ran after him. Now Mr. Lewis was absolutely sure the man was following him and he was really frightened.

There was a wall on one side of the road, and he quickly climbed up on it and jumped down on the other side of the wall. “If he passes and doesn’t stop”, Mr. Lewis thought, “everything will be all right”. But the man didn’t pass. He climbed up on the wall and jumped down, just as Mr. Lewis had done.

Now Mr. Lewis was scared. He only thought, “If he thinks I am a coward, I’ll show him he is making a mistake!” And he stood up and shouted, “What do you want? Why are you following me?”

The other man was so tired that at first it was difficult for him to speak. “I didn’t know that you are such an athlete”, he said at last. “I have to go to Mr. Stradlaster’s house, but I don’t know the way. A man at the station told me that you live across the street from Mr. Stradlaster and he told to me follow you. Please, tell me: how long will it take us to get there? I don’t think I can go much farther”.
