London Markets

Most people in Britain now buy their fresh food in supermarkets and not in traditional markets. But markets are still important. In recent years farmers’ markets, where local farmers and others sell fruit, vegetables or homemade foods directly to the people, are more and more popular.

There is a place on a canal at Camden in North London which is sometimes peaceful during the week. But at the weekends it becomes a market, especially for clothes, handmade things and antiques.

Leadenhall is a food market. It’s one of the several markets in the City.

In the 1960s there was a big fruit and vegetable market in Covent Garden. But the market became too crowded and in 1974 it was moved to another part of London. Today the buildings are the same. But there are cafes and small shops and open-air stalls.
