Present Participle  Active Voice  Is used to express an action which goes on at the same time with the action expressed by the finite verb.   Ex. During the lesson he sits thinking about something else.  During the lesson he sat thinking about something else.

Perfect Participle  Active Voice Is used to express an action which took place before the action expressed by the finite verb.  Ex. Having arrived at the station, he found that the game was already over.

Prepositions and Conjunctions used with Present and Past Participles Present and Past Participles can be used after while, before, when, on, after, despite.  Ex. After working all day, I was very tired.  They can be used to mean ‘because’.  Ex. Having lost her pen, Ann could not write.

Past Participle Is used to form the Passive Voice and Perfect tenses.  Ex. John is always laughed at.  Has he gone ?  As an alternative passive form.  Ex. When given the ball, he ran forward.
