The main body usually consists of two paragraphs.

In the second paragraph we describe ourselves.

In the third paragraph we write our likes and/or dislikes. Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence i.e. a sentence which introduces the topic of the paragraph.

  • In the first paragraph we write about the weather and what we (and the people we are with) are doing at the moment. Then, we say what we like about the place (lakes, beaches, the food)

  • We finish our postcard by giving our impressions of the place

  • We use the present continuous to write about what we are doing, and adjectives to make our piece of writing more interesting

Wonderful time in Malta / warm and sunny/ museum/ beach/ fantastic island/ have breakfast

I ’m coming to Edinburgh for my Master’s! That’s right, they’re finally accepted me. I’m looking forward to it but I haven’t organized things yet and I’m a bit stressed. Luckily, the university is arranging my accommodation so I don’t have to look for a flat, too. However , I’m going to need a part-time job to pay for my expenses. Anyway, I don’t know exactly when I’m coming, but I’m looking forward to seeing you again after all these years.

So, what about you? What have you been up to? Do you still go out like you used to? Start making plans!

Well, that’s all for now. Write back soon.

THEORY

When you write an email to a friend, use informal language: hi, see you soon, write soon , bye

Use contractions: I’m , he can’t, we’ve got

We often use phrasal verbs in informal writing go out, put on

We use more exclamation marks than we do in formal writing

Ex. 27 Read the e-mail. Then tick the three questions that the email answers

Hi Sam,

  4. Phrases with get, have, take.

Ex. 29 Read the letter then choose true/false for statements.

Dear Molly,

It was great to hear from you! I’m so glad you had a good birthday. I loved the photos!

Anyway, you asked for my advice on choosing a language school in the UK. I agree that it’ll really help you English, and you’ll have great fun too. One thing you should do is think about where in the UK you want to go to. Why not make a list of all the things you’d like to see and do there? You might find that it’ll help you choose between, say. London and Edinburgh!

If I were you, I’d do a lot of research. Make sure you check how much they charge, as some schools are more expensive than others. One idea is to contract some local language school and ask them about costs.

Finally, my advice is to not make the decision on your own. Ask your English teacher and your parents to help you, and see what other students say online about their experiences. I hope these ideas help. I have to go now because dinner is ready.

Write soon!

Lots of love,

Hannah.

Hannah starts her letter by giving the first piece of advice. T/F

She refers to something that Molly wrote in her last letter. T/F

She gives three main pieces of advice. T/F

Each main piece of advice is giving in a separate paragraph T/F

She just given her main advice without any further explanation. T/F

Ex. 30 What advice you would you give Lucy?

Also, I need your advice. I’m in a band with two other friends from school. We usually just play for fun at home. Now the other two want us to enter a talent show on TV, but I’m not if I want to. Do you think it’s a good idea? If I say “no”. I think my friends might be very unhappy.

What do you think I should do?

Write soon,

Lucy.

Ex. 31 Study the table and write your letter.

Give your first piece of advice

You asked for my advice on/about…

You asked me about ….

Give further advice

One thing you might /should do is…

Have you thought about….?

You could always…

Why not…?

How about….?

If I were you, I’d ….

You should also think about….

UNIT 4. AN E-MAIL ASKING FOR INFORMATION

THEORY

When writing an e-mail asking for information:

- use set phrases to say why you are writing (I’m interested in…so..; I want some information about…; I’d like to know…)

- use words / phrases to list your questions (firstly; first of all; next; then; also; finally)

- don’t use the direct questions only. Use indirect questions, too. (Can/Could you tell me ….? Do you know..?)

- end by saying thanks and mentioning that you’d like a reply as soon as possible.

Ex. 32 Below is an e-mail Peter has sent to his friend, Gavin. Gavin recently stayed at a campsite and was very pleased with it.

Hi, Gavin!

How are things? Listen, you stayed at a campsite last summer and you really liked it there, right? Well, I need some information. Could you tell me a bit more about it?
