Radio – isthe process of sending and receiving messages through the air; broadcasting programmes for people to listen to.

Newspaper – is a paper printed and sold usually daily or weekly with news, advertisements etc.

Tabloid – is a newspaper with rather small pages, many pictures and little small news.

The Internet – is a way to communicate with your partner who might be a thousand miles away using the computer or phone.

Television – is broadcasting programmes (news, plays, advertisements, shows, etc.) for people to watch on their television sets.

  1. Listening. You will hear the TV announcement about criminals wanted by the police. Choose the correct answer A – D. Which man is the speaker describing?

  2. And now we are coming to the main part of our lesson. You’ve prepared four creative projects in groups. Let’s watch and enjoy them. The themes of the projects are television programmes. So, what’s on TV?

  1. The first project is about people working on TV. Its name is “Inside TV”.

Guest editor. Hi, my name is Ann. Can you imagine your life without TV? I cannot. TV is my life. I work here as a guest editor. There are a lot of TV shows: interviews, talk-shows, “round tables”, news, etc. All these programmes have one thing in common – the dialogue. Dialogue with any interesting people: pop stars, scientists, artists or experts. The more famous the person is, the more desirable it is for the popular talk show. And my job is real hunt for interesting characters. I never appear in the frame. It’s no matter. I know that success of the programme depends on me. I must be able to communicate, to hold strings in the hands of various contacts. This ability is only one facet of skill guest editor. And you should remember: the audience loves their heroes, but needs new faces. This is the paradox with which the guest editor is forced to reckon. So I should find the right person. And I am the first, who communicate with future guests. And my task is to find win-win arguments for them to come.

What? I see, you want to know qualities which can help you to become a guest editor. Well, this profession requires the ability to communicate, to gain people, politeness, kindness, responsibility, high self-organization, ability to cope with stress. You should have a pleasant voice, right speech, a good ear, a good memory. Have you got all these personalities? Well done! After graduating the university you can come here and work as an editor.

Wow! I am really pressed for time! I should meet my next guest. And you…Do you want to know more about TV? I can introduce one of my best friends to you. She is the modest person you’ve ever met, I’m sure. But she always has brilliant ideas. She is a screen-writer. Meet Victoria!

Screen-writer.Hello. Sorry, but I don’t like to speak to the unknown people…and I’m going to Karina now. Who is she? She is a director of an interesting TV show. And I have a wonderful idea. Do you see these papers? Here I’ve written some new lines of our show. I hope some time later it can turn into an unusual film…

  • Oh, Karina, morning! How are you?

  • Morning, Victoria! Thanks, I’m fine, and you?

  • I’m OK. Here are some new lines of our show. I think it may be interesting. Look through, please.

  • Of course I’ll do it. No doubt it’s interesting. You are our good genius.

So, you see – I’m only a screen-writer. This profession is for those who are accustomed to painstaking work and is ready for work again and again. If you are a good screen-writer, you get a chance to make a great movie and go down in history – of course as a member of a wonderful film-crew. But our fantasy isn’t unlimited. So we have to fight for success… Sorry, I have to go now.

  • Where is Victoria?

  • She has gone yet.

  • She is really talented screen-writer. Olga, you should find Sophie, our costume designer. We need to discuss new costumes for the new line. Invite her immediately, please. Ask her to take her latest works.

  • Sure.

Director. As you see I’m a director. You know, this profession is becoming more and more popular. But you should understand, it is very difficult and responsible job. I take part in writing script, work with actors, designers, stylists, cameramen… I must control the whole process. Times have changed, and my work becomes more exciting and challenging at the same time.

My duties include a lot of responsibilities. After the end of shooting my work doesn’t end, I should control cutting, sound and special effects. Only the film or show has released I can consider my work done and wait for praise or criticism from experts and ordinary viewers. I’m a person who receives rewards or suffers because of complete collapse of the performance or the picture.

  • Karina, Sophie is coming in a few minutes.

  • Thanks, Olga.

Director’s Assistant.Well… I’m Olga, director’sassistant. It’s one of the most important professions. My main task, as laid down in title, to help the director in rehearsals and performance, coordination of actors and all TV services. I’m responsible for getting in time all suits, the guests should be surrounding by the need of the situation and props. All decorations should be at the right places and work as they must. I come over an hour before the show and check if all is ready in the studio. Oh, here is Sophie, our costume designer.

Costume Designer.Yes, and I love my job very much. What can I tell you about it? Well, costume designer can work in studios, on television, in the theater. My task is to create clothes for characters. It helps the actors to transform into the characters of the film or show.Work with the project begins with the reading of the script and the development of each image. Costume of the character reveals his identity. And creating of a costume is a part of image creation. I interact with the director, designer, stylist or make-up artist and of course with the actors or journalists which take part in the TV show or performance. Nowadays there are a lot of virtual characters. But they also need clothing which costume designers create. Graphic artists embody their sketches with the help of computers.

Do you want to see my works? Look, here some of them are.

  • Sophie, I’m waiting for you.

  • Just a moment, Karina. I’m coming!

Camera operator. Hello. My name is Marina, and I’m a camerawoman. I am in a hurry; I’m looking for my friends, stylists or makeup artists – Olesya and Maria. They are working with our TV journalists, Irina and Anastasia. Do you want to watch how they work? Let’s go! I can say a few words about my job. A camera operator or a cameraman/camerawoman is a professional operator of a film or a video camera. In filmmaking the leading camera operator is usually called a cinematographer, while a cameraman in a video production may be known as a television camera operator, or videographer. It depends on the context and technology involved. As you see, I’m a television camerawoman. I’m responsible for physically operation the camera and maintaining composition and camera angles throughout a given scene. I should interact with the director, actors and crew to make technical and creative decisions. I am a part of film crew consisting of a director of photography and one or more camera assistant. While preparing documentary or news we work with unscripted events. My work is very interesting and exciting. So, here they are!

  • Hi, girls! I’m very glad to introduce my friends: Olesya, Maria, Nastya and Anastasia. You look so wonderful today!

  • Thanks, you too.

  • Girls, tell something about your professions.

  • Sorry, my School News is in a few minutes, so I have to go. See you later.

Stylist.Stylist is primarily a carrier of knowledge of fashion history, its canons and trends. Stylist job in most cases is divided into areas representing such species as a professional stylist, makeup artist, fashion designer, stylist-hairdresser, image maker and others. We can help you to become a personality rather than part of a motley crowd. Typically, the person making a request to a specialist, already comes with ideas about his future appearance. Master remains correct them, suggest, advice as appropriate and which ones should be abandoned. This can be a way of creating everyday and preparing for special occasions. Our specialty – makeup artists – is one of the most important in the world of theatre, film or TV. Everybody likes to watch beautiful people. And we help our journalists, actors, guests to look wonderful. Our aim is to implement their image correction means cosmetology and competently hide flaws and emphasize the dignity of the person.

Studio sound engineer. Nastya, I’m glad you are here. Karina is waiting for us.

As you see I am a soundwoman. My task is to install microphones to percussion, select microphones, compressors, preamps. Quality of my work will have an impact on the record. Most producers like to work with sound engineers with whom they have developed a working relationship for several years. As for me, I have been working in our crew for five years. We create sound design television broadcasts, monitor the quality of the submitted entries and broadcast live. This is particularly important work. If you work live it won’t give you a chance to repeat the bad episode and fix the problem. And of course we should pay attention on acoustic properties of the studio or any hall to do job well. What does it mean?

Journalist. Now it’s my turn to say a few words about journalists and TV-commentators. Whenever and wherever something important happens, journalists and photographers are reporting on the events and taking pictures. We often put ourselves in dangerous situations. Some may be seriously hurt or even killed because of their efforts. We go to areas where there are conflicts to report on the war. We also report on political protests.

Our profession, our job is very important for all people. Our aims are to inform, educate and entertain people. Welcome to Television!

    -…
    - How many releases of the cartoon we’ve got? Whether will they be new?
    -…

-
- So, unfortunately, our TV show comes to the end. We were glad to welcome you today in our studio, Gregory. Thanks that you’ve shared your time with us. See you!

  1. Conclusion.

Thanks a lot for your projects. You’ve done large work to show us your own view on TV. We all learned something new about this meaningful media, people who work there, etc.

Your home task will be connected with you projects, of course. It will be a short composition (100 – 120 words) “Is it easy to work on TV?” or “The best project of the lesson”. Don’t forget about arguments and examples.

And now we have little time to express your opinion about the lesson and about projects you’ve watched. Which of them do you like more and why? What was not so pleasant during the lesson? What was the most difficult for you?
