ПОЯСНИТЕЛЬНАЯ ЗАПИСКА

Эти задания предлагаются для подготовки к олимпиаде по английскому языку в 5 классах, где обучение проводится со 2-го класса, а также среди учащихся 5-х классов, интересующихся английским языком.

Учащимся предлагаются 4 задания. Максимальное количество баллов в 1 задании – 8, во 2-м задании- 10, в 3-м задании -8, в 4-м задании- 10. Итого -36 баллов.

Четвёртое задание следует оценивать следующим образом: за каждое правильно написанное предложение ученик получает 2 балла. Если в предложении сделана негрубая ошибка, например, в правописании, то можно зачесть 1 балл.

Задания, написанные по-английски, можно объяснить по - русски, на усмотрение учителя.

Task 1.

Read part of a letter written by a student, Lucy, to her best friend.

The school system is really strange. We have to do tests every six weeks!!! I’m not used to doing tests so often. I didn’t do very well in the first two or three, but it’s OK now.

The people are great! My host family is wonderful and the other students are really friendly. They don’t know much about the rest of the world. They all want to study somewhere interesting, Paris or Rome. They think everywhere is near London… They wanted to know if I spend my weekends in Paris!!! They were surprised when I said I didn’t.

I thought Americans only ate burgers, but I was wrong. The food is great- but there’s so much of it! I can never finish what’s on my plate.

Then there’s the language. Some American English words are different from British English ones. They pronounce some words differently. At first they looked at me in a funny way when I asked for ‘a glass of water’. I had to pronounce ‘water’ with a ‘d’ in the middle instead of a ‘t’!

Then there’s the weather. It was really cold during the winter, much colder than at home, so I was ill most of the time. And the snow! I’ve never seen anything like it. Just look at the picture I’ve sent. I couldn’t get used to walking in the snow and I kept falling down, which amused my friends a lot. Now that it’s spring, it’s really hot. It’s absolutely wonderful! And life is much easier. I’m having a ball!
