"Get" is one of the most frequently used verbs in modern English, especially in colloquial style. It has a wide variety of senses; for example, it may mean "receive" (as in"Did you get my letter?"), "become" (as in "She soon got tired"), "bring to a certain state" (as in "She got the children ready for school"), and so on. The present article does not attempt to deal with all these senses but concentrates on the intransitive use of "get" to denote movement, particularly in relation to the verbs "come" and "go", which were discussed in a previous article.¹ The aim is to clear up certain difficulties of usage which tend to arise among Russian speakers of English, and to pick out and illustrate some related idiomatic uses of "get" which could be particularly useful to readers.
