Wellington

• Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. It often rains in this city, but it’s warm and windy there: in January the temperature is about 16,and in July it’s about 8. The population of Wellington is about 460 thousand people. At first Maori’s tribes lived here, but in 1840 English settled and called this town Wellington In the honour of Arthur Wesley Wellington.

• There were about 4 million people in New Zealand in 2010. 67% are Europeans, 14% – Maori, 9% – Asians and 6% – Polynesians.

State and Politics

• The state is built on the principles of the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy and is among the developed countries. Political power is exercised by the elected Parlament. The King reigns but does not have full power. The monarch is a symbol.

Food

• Most New Zealanders are English, so the local cuisine is similar to the British. There are, however, some slight differences. Among the traditional local dishes you can mark the steaks and roasts, Roast kumara (sweet potato fried with sour cream).

• Pavlova (a cake of whipped egg whites and whipped cream, decorated with sliced fruit) and pies with various fillings (beef, lamb, pork, potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, cheese, etc.).

• From the culture of the locals – Maori – borrowed a lot of seafood (especially mussels, lobsters and shellfish).

• The most popular in New Zealand's national sport has always been Rugby.
