Образец эссе с аргументацией «за» и «против»
In western countries after secondary school, students very often do not continue immediately with their studies, but they take a one year break , called a ”gap year”, when they travel or do voluntary work.
Write an argumentive essay presenting arguments for and against the gap year.
In today’s word of fierce competition, it is important for young people to get well-prepared for the challenges of the future. Thus the institution of gap year can be regarded as a step in the right direction though it is not without its problems.
In its favour, the gap year seems to be useful psychologically as it helps young people understand their needs and interests better before they actually commit themselves to any particular career path. Besides, the gap year has educational advantages because it offers a lot of opportunities to learn about the world and one’s own place in it. For all these reasons, the gap year can be regarded as a positive social institution.
However, as critics are quick to point out, not every young person can afford to travel around the world and many of them end up sitting around at home, which can be very demotivating. What is more, the gap year can in fact be harmful as it interrupts with the rhythm of learning and often makes it difficult for students to return to their studies.
The other side of the coin is that students need this year of rest. It gives them an opportunity to consider their plans for future and make the final choice of their profession.
All in all, the gap year may arouse mixed feelings, but still thousands of people every year take a year off. One can only hope they will use it fruitfully, minimizing the dangers and taking full advantage of its benefits.

Dear Suzanne,
1. Thanks for your letter. I’m glad Sue still remembers me! I’m fine, though since I came back home from Brussels, I’ve been really very busy. You know what it’s like when your exams are coming up, don’t you?
2. Anyway, I promise to answer your questions about the trip. Get Mum and Dad whatever you like. They are fond of sweet things, so some Belgian chocolates would be OK. You don’t have to get me anything, really. It’s not easy to say what sort of clothes to bring because the weather is so changeable these days. I’d bring some T-shirts with a couple of sweaters.
4. We’re really looking forward to your visit to London. We’ll go wherever you want but I think you’d like the British Museum and the Tower of London. We’re on the Internet now, so you can e-mail whoever you want whenever you want.
5. Well, I really have to go now as I’ve got my fitness class. I’m really looking forward to seeing you. Send me your flight details.
Lots of love, Sonia
