Customs and traditions of Great Britain
Every nation has its own customs and traditions. Great Britain is also rich in its traditions and customs which play an important role in the life of people. British people love their traditions and try to keep them.
Royal traditions
One of the British royal traditions is the Changing of the Guard . It takes place at Buckingham Palace every day. It’s a very beautiful ceremony. It lasts 45 minutes.

Queen’s official birthday is celebrated on the second Saturday in June . Everybody can watch a big colourful parade with hundreds of soldiers. This parade is called “Trooping the Colour”.

The Queen’s telegram is not very old custom. It is for the oldest people. The Queen sends a telegram to every British person on their one-hundredth birthday.
Holiday traditions
British holidays are rich in traditions and customs too. Halloween is one of British holidays which is celebrated on the 31 st of October. People dress up as witches and ghosts. Their houses are decorated with pumpkins. There is a special tradition for children to go to their neighbours and play “trick or treat”.

Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes’ Night is popular in Britain. On the 5 th of November 1605, Guy Fawkes wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. But he was caught and hanged. On this day people make models of him and burn them on big bonfires.

On 25 th December, all British people celebrate Christmas . It is the time when the family gets together. People decorate Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve children hang up their stockings for Santa Claus on their beds. A traditional Christmas dinner consists of roast turkey, potatoes and Christmas pudding.
Meal traditions
Most of free time the British like to spend with their families at home. And t he tradition of tea drinking in the UK is very pleasant. Tea is Britain’s favourite drink. They have 6-7 cups of tea every day. People drink tea for breakfast, lunch, dinner, at tea-time and for supper.
Meal traditions
British people keep to their traditions even in meals. They like to eat fried eggs, sausages, bacon with toasts, fried tomatoes or porridge for breakfast. The most famous national dessert is pudding.
Sport traditions
The British have also traditions of sport. Some of them are very old. In the Marble Championship the British Champion is crowned. He gets a silver cup. Folk dancers call it Morris Dancing . It’s a dancing in beautiful clothes with handkerchiefs or big sticks in their hands.

Another old tradition is the rowing race between the students of Oxford and Cambridge Universities on Easter Sunday. It takes place on the Thames every spring.

The Grand National horse race is one of the most famous events in Britain. Every year it takes place near Liverpool. Professional jockeys and amateur riders participate there.

London marathon is not so old. But it is well-known all over the world. Olympic medalists Chris Brasher and John Disley organized the first marathon in 1981. Each year about 30,000 people take part in it. This competition raises money for charity.

British customs and traditions are part of the history of Britain. They tell a lot about this great country.
I learned about the interesting traditions of the UK. I think that British people are not only proud of their customs and traditions, but also appreciate them.
