PART II. READING

TASK 1

You are going to read the text. In this section you will find after each of the passages a number of questions or unfinished statements about the passage. For tasks 1-5 you must choose the one which you think fits the best. Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

The first week was awful. The café had never done such good business. The owner gave up wiping the tables between the customers: there wasn’t time. He just stood behind the cash register trying to avoid my eye. I hated him quietly and steadily while I worked as I had never worked before. I told myself I’d stay till the end of the week and get my wages out of him before I told him I was never coming back.

On the Saturday night it was after eleven when the last customer left. The owner stood over the open cash drawer which was stuffed full of notes, smiling. I walked over to him and said: “While you’ve got the drawer open, may I have my wages, please?”

He counted my money very slowly and passed it to me. I put it in my pocket, turned and walked towards the door. I think he guessed because he said: “You could have a bit more next week.”

It went on being hard work, but there was never a week like the first, chiefly because I didn’t mind it so much. I felt less tired and I learned a lot, especially the week the cook was off with back trouble. I had never cooked before beyond heating up things out of tins, but now I learned how to fry fish to a golden brown, grill eight sausages at a time and make an omelette such as the customers had never tasted before. For this I used a French recipe out of the book I borrowed from the library. From it I also learned how to make beans taste special by adding chopped herbs and brown sugar and onion salt. This I had to order from a grocer in York.

Not everybody liked it first, but after a bit people were coming in specially, not just to drink but to eat. This week I was doing the cooking regular customers came in asking for this or that “cooked in the new way”. The owner let me help with cooking even after the cook came back. She didn’t care for the arrangement much, complaining that I was just a waitress and that she should be paid more. But he just laughed and said she would have to put up with it.

I stayed on there for two months. What I was earning in the end was not bad pay for the waitress in those days; for the first time in my life I was saving money. When I finally left, he 2was really sorry to see me go, saying I had been a good worker and he gave me some extra money as a present which brought my savings up to $50.

I remember sitting on the train to London listening to the wheels saying “I can do anything - I can do anything - .” I let my fingers tap out the rhythm of those train wheels and whisper to myself “I can do anything… I can do anything…”

    1. Why did the owner offer the writer more money at the end of the first week?

a) She deserved it for working so hard.

b) The café had taken a lot of money that week

c) He didn’t want her to leave.

d) He was in a generous mood on Saturday night.

    1. After the first week the writer found life at the café easier because

a) there were fewer customers to serve.

b) her attitude to the job changed.

c) she was able to get some time off.

d) work in the kitchen was less rushed.

    1. While she was in charge of cooking, the writer

a) invented some new recipes.

b) concentrated on cooking French food.

c) cooked dishes in a different way.

d) had to go to York for a special item.

    1. Why was the writer allowed to continue doing some of the cooking?

a) More help was needed in the kitchen.

b) The cook wanted an increase in wages

c) The owner could pay her less as a cook than as a waitress

d) It was bringing good business to the café.

    1. On the train, the writer was happy because

a) she felt confident about the future

b) she was excited about going to London

c) she had been given extra money on leaving

d) she had given up the job she disliked

TASK 2

For Questions 6-11, you must read the text and complete the gaps with the necessary clauses. There is one extra clause. Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

Russia is a huge country covering a large part of Eastern Europe and the whole of the northern Asia. 6) …… .

Russia’s climate is continental. Much of the country has only two seasons; summer and winter.

There are two main reasons for the cold of the Russian winter. Firstly, the large area of land means that no warm ocean waters are able to affect the land mass. The second reason is the high latitude of much of the country. Its northern coastline borders the Artic Ocean, 7) ….. .

The harshness of the Russian winter causes particular problems for transport. The rivers remain frozen for long periods in winter, 8) …… . As road transport can also be difficult, railways and air transport are very important.

As a general rule, the severity and the length of winter increase the further eastwards you go in Russia. The only harbours that remain ice-free throughout the year are those on the Black Sea coast and around Murmansk and Archangelsk, 9) …… . The sea route along from the Atlantic to the Pacific is kept open for short periods in the summer with the help of ice-breakers.

The cold is so extreme in the northern and eastern Siberia that a phenomenon called permafrost exists. This is where the soil below the topsoil remains frozen all year 10) …... . This raises problems for building constructions and pipelines.

Almost everywhere in the country, rainfall levels are low. In fact, in some major grain producing areas there can be droughts, 11) ….. . The spring and early summer months are the wettest in much of the country.

A although the topsoil may thaw out during the summer

B which remains frozen for much of the year

C so except in the extreme south, inland water transport is not possible

D which drastically affects crop production some years

E which means that it experiences anything from Artic to hot desert conditions
