Reading

Task 1.

Read the extract from the novel "Jungle Book" by R. Kipling and answer questions 1-5.

The deserted city stood quiet and empty in the moonlight. Mowgli and Kaa found the staircase that went underground. Finally they came to the root of some great tree with a deep hole under it. They went into it and found themselves in a great cave. Suddenly Mowgli saw something white moving towards him. It was the biggest cobra - a creature about five metres long. It was white and even the spectacle-marks of his hood were yellow. His eyes were as red as rubies, and he was most wonderful.

'What of the city?' asked the White Cobra.

'The Jungle is above our heads', said Mowgli.

‘I told you', said Kaa to the Cobra, T told you four months ago, that there is no city above.'

'Then who is he?' said the White Cobra.

'Mowgli they call me', was the answer. 'The wolves are my people, and Kaa is my brother. Father of Cobras, who are you?'

‘I am the Keeper of the King's Treasure. Many years ago my skin was dark. One day the King put me here. He told me to kill anybody to come here to steal. Then they put the treasure down. Sometimes I think that my city ...'

'There is no city. Look up', Kaa said.

‘I know that you come here to tell me a lie. You want me to believe you and to leave the cave! You are going to steal!'

'Father of Cobras, I see nothing here to take away', said Mowgli.

The boy looked around and saw that on the cave floor there were thousands and thousands gold and silver coins, rubies, sapphires, diamonds; there were gold statues of forgotten gods; there were silver swords, and hunting-knives decorated with diamonds; there were gold plates and cups, rings and bracelets.

But Mowgli did not understand what these things were for. Only the knives interested him a little, but his knife was better. At last he found something really great! It was a three-foot ankus - something like a small boathook. The top was one round, shining ruby. The handle was decorated with turquoises and it was nice and easy to hold it. The handle ended in emerald leaves and ruby flowers. The spike and the hook were made of steel with pictures of elephant-catching.

‘I do not understand', said Mowgli. 'The things are hard and cold and you can't eat them. But this' - he took the ankus — I want to take it away. You say that they are all yours? Will you give it to me, and I will bring you frogs to eat?'

'Oh, yes, I will give it...' he said. 'Till you go away'.

'But I'm going now. This place is dark and cold, and I want to see this thing in the sun'.

'Look by your foot! What is that there?'

Mowgli lifted up something white. 'It is the bone of a man's head', he said quietly. 'And here are two more'.

'They came to take the treasure away many years ago. I just spoke to them in the dark ...'
