What is Phonetics ?

• Phonetics: is the science which studies the charactristics of human sound making, especially those sounds used in speech, and provides — methods for their description, classification and transcription.

The history of phonetics

Phonetics has a long history . It was known to ancient Greeks and Hindus. But as a science it began to develop in the second half of the 19 century.

Phonetics is closely connected with lexicology, grammar and stylistics as the phonetic system of a language, its vocabulary and grammar constitute one indivisible whole.

What does it study?

Phonetics is the study of human sounds and phonology is the classification of the sounds within the system of a particular language or languages.

It is the study of the production and reception of speech sounds. It is concerned with the sounds of language; how these sounds are articulated and how listeners perceive them.

The branches of phonetics

• Articulatory phonetics (production): The study of how speech sounds are produced or articulated.
• Auditory phonetics (perception): The study of how speech sounds are perceived via the ear.
• Acoustic phonetics : It deals with the physical properties of the sounds.
