Shops and shopping

When we want to buy something, we go to the shop where it is sold.

Sugar, tea, coffee, salt and so on are sold at the grocer's

Bread, buns, cakes are sold at the baker’s

Meat is sold at the butcher’s

We buy vegetables at the greengrocer’s

Cakes and sweets are sold at the confectionery.

When we want to buy clothes, we go to the clothing shop.

We buy jewellery, silver and gold watches at the jeweller’s

To buy tobacco and cigarettes we go to the tobacconist’s

We buy books at the book-shop.

The salesgirl or shop-assistant stands behind the counter

The cashier sits at the cash desk

Customers give money to the cashier, who gives the cheque and the change

Some shops have many departments. They are called department stores

In some shops there are no salesmen or salesgirls, only cashiers. They are called self-service shops.
