What is special about today’s date?
On March 22, 1943 the group of fascists had surrounded the village Khatyn. All the inhabitants of Khatyn – women, old men and children – were driven to a shed and burnt.
And now let’s visit this Belarusian village that became a symbol of sorrow, heroism and inexorability of Soviet people in their war against fascist aggressors.
View of the memorial’s central part
STEP 1
At the centre of the complex stands an astonishing 6m bronze statue called “The Unconquered Man” ( «Скульптура непокорённого человека» ) -
a tribute
to Iosif Kaminsky and his son.
Iosif Kaminsky was the only person from the adult inhabitants who had rescued. He laid near the body of his son for a long time and was covered with wounds and burns. Only after 2 days people picked him up, hid and cured him.
The sculptor Sergey Selikhanov saw in I.Kaminsky the prototype of his sculpture of the man who goes along the burnt ground of Khatyn, carrying the body of his son in his hands.
Step 2
The fiery breach in black marble slabs flares there eternally.
Through this fiery breach people tried to escape.
The symbolic roof of the shed
These marble slabs are stacked as a two-level fallen roof just there where people of Khatyn were burnt alive.
Step 3
«Люди добрые, помните:
любили мы жизнь, и Родину нашу, и вас, дорогие.
Мы сгорели живыми в огне.
Наша просьба ко всем:
пусть скорбь и печаль обернуться в мужество ваше и силу,
чтобы смогли вы утвердить навечно мир и покой на земле.
Чтобы отныне нигде и никогда в вихре пожаров жизнь не умирала!»
There are words of Khatyn’s dead people to living people on the white marble wall.
Step 4
On the place of each 26 houses are the bottom parts of framework made of concrete beams.
