Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong was an American trumpeter, composer, singer and occasional actor who was one of the most influential figures in jazz. His career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in jazz.
Louis in music
Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" trumpet and cornet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance . Armstrong demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes .
Social status
Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers to «cross over», whose skin color was secondary to his music in an America.
His artistry and personality allowed him socially acceptable access to the upper echelons of American society which were highly restricted for black men of his era.
Childhood
Armstrong was born into a poor family in New Orleans , Louisiana , and was the grandson of slaves. His father abandoned the family when Louis was a child.
Armstrong's childhood was engaged in coal transported, the sale of newspapers and other similar work.
The first tool
At seven years old he started to help around the house in the family Karnofsky coal merchants. In the end it became almost an adopted son in the family.
Karnofsky later gave the money to buy Armstrong Cornet, his first own musical instrument.
Mastering Cornet
Armstrong soon began to sing in a small street of the vocal ensemble, playing the drums and trained their ears in a few years. The first musical education he received in the orphanage «Ueyf Home» Labor Camp. He joined the brass band, where he learned Cornet.
Musical education
He played in the city's frequent brass band parades and listened to older musicians. He studied with Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, Kid Ory, Fats Mereybl, and King Oliver, who acted as a mentor and father figure to the young musician. Later He became second trumpet for the Tuxedo Brass Band.
