Once there was a country mouse and a city mouse .They were cousins. The Country Mouse lived in a small house deep in the roots of an old tree. The City Mouse lived in a big city and one day he came to visit his cousin. The Country Mouse made a big dinner and they sat down to eat at the wooden table. But the City Mouse didn’t like the plain food. He didn’t like his little straw bed either. One day they went to find some berries and mushrooms to store for the winter. On their way home the City Mouse was so busy telling the Country Mouse about the city that he didn’t notice a huge owl swooping down towards him. They ran very fast and hid in a ditch. The owl flew away, but the City mouse was so frightened that he decided to go home at once. He invited the Country Mouse to come and stay with him some day.
The Country Mouse thought it was a very good idea. He packed his suitcase and went to the city. There were a lot of people and cars. The Country mouse had never heard so much noise or seen so many bright lights. The City Mouse lived in a big house in a busy street. The house was lovely, with a spacious living room and a nice kitchen. The City Mouse prepared a huge feast of cakes, cream and puddings. But the food was all too rich and sweet for the Country Mouse. He began to feel sick. Next day the Country Mouse found a big piece of cheese. It smelled delicious. He didn’t realize that it was a mousetrap! The City Mouse rescued him just in time. Suddenly they saw a large cat and had to run for their lives back to their hole in the wall. The Country Mouse was so afraid now that he could only think about his country home. When at last he fell asleep, the Country Mouse dreamt of his cozy house. In the morning he left for the country. (* based on the Ladybird retelling by Molly Perham).
