The story of Valentine

It all happened in the third century AD. The mad emperor Claudius II was the ruler of Rome at the time, and he believed that single men made the best soldiers. His argument was that married men were unwilling to leave their homes and families, and go off to fight in wars. His incredible solution was to pass a law to stop people getting married.

Valentine was the Christian bishop in a small town not far from Rome, called Interamna. He was against the new law and he promised to help anyone who wanted to get married. He told young lovers to come to him, and he continued to marry young couples in secret.

Claudius heard rumours about a bishop who was a friend of lovers and continued to perform marriages. He ordered his guards to bring Valentine to his place. He was impressed by the young bishop’s seriousness and by his strong faith. To save Valentine from death, Claudius tried to convert him. He wanted the bishop to believe in the old Roman gods, but Valentine refused to give up his Christian beliefs. Instead he tried to convert Claudius to Christianity. The emperor was furious and decided to execute him.

Valentine was sent to prison to wait for the day of his execution. While he was imprisoned, the daughter of the jailer looked after him. Valentine talked to her a lot about his faith in God, and soon the two of them fell in love.

The jailer’s daughter was blind, but on the morning of Valentine’s execution, her sight returned. It was a miracle! Just before he died, on February 14th, 270 AD, Valentine sent the first Valentine’s message. He wrote a final letter to his love, and signed it “from your Valentine”.
