1. Teacher: today we’ll discuss a global problem. Now all of you look at the blackboard, please. Here you can see some pictures. Look at them and brainstorm your ideas about what our today lesson will be devoted to.

Pupils: obesity.

2. Teacher: What do you know about obesity? Is it a problem in our country?

  • What causes obesity?

  • Who is affected?

  • Is there a cure?

  • Why are people so worried about it?

Teacher: You are going to read about obesity. There are cards on your desks. Here some new words from the text are defined. Discuss in pairs whether the definition given in the cards is true or false. Use a dictionary if necessary.

Group A: you are going to read a newspaper article about a report written by a group of parents concerned that their children may become obese. In your opinion, what might such a group say about the causes of obesity in children?

Group B: you are going to read a newspaper article covering a report by a group of food scientists worried about the number of people becoming obese. What do you think this group would say about the causes of obesity?

Group A

Food industry targeted over obesity epidemic

Today the pressure group “Parents Against Obesity” sent a detailed report of their concerns to the government along with more than 50,000 signatures asking for tighter controls against the food industry’s advertising directly into the children’s market.

Fears for young

Beginning with a statement outlining what it sees as the main causes of obesity in children, the report covers various areas in which it proposes tougher control and action against what it calls, “an overwhelming campaign to persuade children to eat precisely what they need the least.”

Food advertising

Principally, the report believes that advertising fast food and high-sugar snacks during children’s television programmes encourages children to desire and consume foods which offer very little of what the body needs to develop healthily. The industry uses cartoon characters, children’s areas in restaurants, and film tie-ins to capture the attention of the young making it very difficult for parents to guide their kids towards healthy choices. Children live in an adult world and naturally respond warmly to anything they feel is purposefully made for them; even advertising.

Health Warning

One of the reports more interesting suggestions was that food advertising carry a health warning, such as those on cigarettes, stating clearly the actual fat and sugar content of each food and the danger for the long-term health and wellbeing of badly-nourished children.

Group B

Nutrition experts predict future eating-disorder epidemic

A group of nutritional experts working for the EU today published a report outlining their concerns over figures suggesting that, if present eating trends
continue, we could see an epidemic of obesity-related deaths and eating- disorders within the next twenty years. Numbers of people with health complications arising out of obesity have soared across Europe in the last ten years.

Obesity: nature or nurture?

The scientists claim that some people are

more prone to developing destructive eating habits than others, highlighting those most at risk as members of families with a generational trend towards obesity and food-related illnesses.

The report cites a combination of both environmental and inherited genetic factors as the twin causes of obesity and argues that both contribute to the development of the illness.

It is suggested that possession of an ‘obesity gene’ creates intolerance for high-sugar, processed carbohydrate foods which stimulate strong feelings of well-being and pleasure in the individual. Such a tendency when coupled with particularly difficult or

painful period in life can lead to a destructive eating pattern leading to respiratory problems, immobility, heart disease and early death.

While the report recognises that anyone might develop bad habits it consistently argues that some individuals just don’t tolerate sugary, high-carbohydrate foods, in much the same way as the Eskimo and Aboriginal cultures struggle with an intolerance to alcohol.

An EU spokesperson has welcomed the report saying that its findings may provide the basis for future initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the issues within individual member states.

Teacher: Now read your texts again and complete these statements with notes from your text and your understanding.

The report which is written by_____________________________________, addresses

____________________________and covers obesity in the __________________________

population.

The report describes the main of cause of obesity as___________________________

and also mentions __________________________ and____________________________.

Another point made in the report is that ______________________________________

_________________________________________________________________.

Teacher: now you are going to study figures from six nations on:

  • Obesity rates

  • Average purchasing power of the individual in dollars (PPP)

  • Cost of a Big Mac

  • Size of service economy as % of economy

  • % of population below poverty line

  • Number of TV channels

The nations are: UK, Argentina, UAE, Singapore, Australia, Zimbabwe.

Study the information in your cards and look for connections. The speech functions for describing connections are on the blackboard.

Describing connections:

  • I see a strong relationship between …and… .

  • I see a connection between…and… .

  • There might be a strong connection between… and… .

  • I don’t see much of a link between …and… .

  • doesn’t seem to have any relationship with…at all.

Teacher: And now imagine that an American fast food company opens a restaurant in a small provincial town in Russia. – How can it change a local community? - What are the advantages and disadvantages for the local community?

You are invited to be members of a town council. Your town is characterised by traditional values and culture. At present, the economy is a bit depressed and there is a fear of unemployment. The locals’ farms mainly produce vegetables such as potatoes and tomatoes. A town council made up of the Mayor, a farmer, local businessmen and the school’s head teacher governs the town locally. Everyone in town is talking about the possibility of a fast food restaurant opening in the town centre. Opinion in the town is divided as to whether this would be good for the local area or not. The mayor has called a meeting, which is planned to end in a vote on whether to accept the restaurant or not.

The local headmaster: You are concerned that your pupils’ health may suffer if a fast food restaurant opens up locally. Bad diet may affect their energy levels and concentration and may increase the amount of litter locally. You are also worried that rates of obesity among the young may increase.

The local farmer: You want the restaurant to open because you believe you could win the contracts to supply beef and chicken to the restaurant. At present you grow vegetables but you are willing to take a risk in investing the money necessary to change your farm. You fear for the future if there is no growth in the economy.

The traditional restaurant owner: You are the owner of a successful local business selling mainly traditional food. Recently you have changed the menu to include Pizza. You are worried that if the restaurant opens you will lose business. You wonder too what may become of your national cuisine in twenty years time.

The Mayor (also, the chairman of the meeting): You don’t really want your nice town looking like America. Last week the man who wishes to open the restaurant offered you 10000 Euros to vote for him at the meeting. You have not decided what to do. You would like to see the local economy improving but you are not sure that this restaurant will help. Poor areas have fast food places; they stay poor. If you want to, take the money. Just try to sound like you have thought about both sides.

The would-be restaurant owner: You are the local businessman working with the fast food company in opening a restaurant here. You feel that it would help the local economy, creating jobs both in the restaurant and in the support businesses including cleaning, security and farming. You offered the Mayor 10000 Euros to buy his vote but you don’t know if he will vote for you. This business is your last chance to make a million before you are fifty and you are determined to make it work.
