Basic facts about the origin of the holiday, the country, where it is celebrated

Ireland is an island to the northwest of continental Europe. It is the third-largest island in Europe. People who live in Ireland are called Irish. The capital city of Irelamd is Dublin.

The national flag of Ireland is green, white and orange. A shamrock is a three-leaved clover. Three is Ireland’s magic number and the Irish say three-leafed shamrocks bring good luck.

Green is the Irish colour. Firstly because the green shamrock leaf is the national plant of Ireland. Secondly because Ireland is called the *Emerald Isle*with lots of green pastures.

One reason Saint Patrick’s day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland as he was the one who brought Christianity to the Irish.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17? One theory is that Saint Patrick died on March 17 and he was 461 years old.

Another symbol of Saint Patrick’s day is a leprechaun.

Old stories tell the tail of the leprechaun who is a shoemaker and keeps a pod of gold hidden.
