St. Patrick`s Day

Denis: Hello everyone! We`re glad to see you here. Our topic for today is St. Patrick`s Day.

Liza: Firstly, it`s important to know what is it.

Originally celebrated with religious feasts and services, St. Patrick’s Day became a secular celebration of Irish culture when it reached the United States alongside Irish immigrants.

Angelina: When is St. Patrick’s Day celebrated?

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of St. Patrick’s death.

Alina: Who was St. Patrick?

St. Patrick was a 5th-century missionary to Ireland who is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. He became a legendary figure by the end of the 7th century and is considered a patron saint of Ireland. Originally, Patrick was born in Roman Britain, but when he was 16 years old, he was kidnapped by Irish robbers and brought to Ireland as a slave. According to legend, Patrick drove out all the snakes and taught the Irish writing.

Liza: The Irish call the holiday for short — Paddy's Day. If you pronounce the [d] sound indistinctly and say Patty's Day, then you will run into a fight. Patrick is an Anglicized version of the Irish name. The short form is Paddy. Patty can be the affectionate nickname of a girl named Patricia or a burger patty.

Angelina: How is it celebrated?

The Irish who emigrated to America have always celebrated this day on a much larger scale. The first Parade was settled in New York. Such things in Ireland appeared only in 1995 in order to attract more tourists. In addition to the parade, now there are funfairs, concerts with traditional Irish music and dancing.

Alina: In America, on St. Patrick's Day, many pubs brew a special green beer.

Traditional dish.

A Google search will surely tell you that the traditional St. Patrick's Day dish is corned beef. This is a traditional dish of the Irish, but only those of them who emigrated to America.

This is beef seasoned in salt. Previously, large salt crystals were called corns, and the dish got its name after them. It is usually served with a cabbage.

Denis: The traditional colour

You can see everywhere green colour and shamrocks. But earlier the colour associated with Patrick was blue. The colour changed to green during the 1798 uprising, when Irish soldiers donned green uniforms to attract attention.

Liza: The symbols of St. Patrick's Day are a shamrock, a green color that symbolizes life and the victory of spring over winter, leprechauns and some others.

Dance

A group Irish dance that is danced during St. Patrick's Day is called "cayley".

Angelina: Who are leprechauns?

First of all, these are the characters of Irish folklore who can fulfill your wish. According to legends, leprechauns are shoemakers, they make shoes for fairies. And they also love to play pranks and dance.
