English Writers
William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
William Shakespeare was the most famous English writer. He lived in 16th century. W. Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564.
His father was a glover and he wanted to give his son a good education. William went to a grammar school. He spent a lot of time walking in the forest or watching the river Avon.
He loved theatre and wanted to be an actor. He went to London and began to work at the theatre. He wrote a lot of plays.
The most famous of his plays are “Othello”, “King Lear”, “Hamlet”, “Romeo and Juliet”. They are very popular and you can see them in any theatre of the world.
Shakespeare died in 1616, but today a lot of people still like his plays.
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Arthur Conan Doyle, the famous English writer, was born on the 22-nd of May in 1859.
He was one of ten children in his family. He did well at school but didn’t like it very much. After finishing school he studied medicine and became a doctor.
He liked to travel all over the world. He was interested in many things such as ghosts and legends.
A.Сonan Doyle was a master of crime fiction stories. The main characters of his books are detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend doctor Watson. They made the writer famous all over the world.
Joanne Rowling (1965)
Joanne Rowling was born in 1965 in Bristol. She has always wanted to be a writer. She wrote her first book when she was six. At school she liked to tell stories to her friends.
After school she went to the University to study French.
When Joanne was 32, she wrote her first novel about Harry Potter. Now we have seven books about the young wizard.
They became popular too. They are translated into many languages.
Jonathan Swift (1667-1745)
Jonathan Swift, the famous English writer was born in a poor family in Dublin, Ireland.
His father died before the boy was born. Jonathan learned very well at school and after school he went to Dublin University.
After finishing Dublin University he worked as a secretary and soon began to write.
In 1726 he wrote the novel “Gulliver’s Travels”. It was a satirical novel about England in his time. People liked the book and it became famous all over the world.
Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie is the world’s most famous detective story writer. Christie is -by the Guinness Book of World Records - the best-selling novelist of all time.
Agatha Christie was born in Devon, England in 1890. She was a talented child. She loved books and learnt to read before she was five. Agatha didn’t go to school, her mother taught her at home and she encouraged Agatha to write. At the age of 18 she wrote her first story.
Her first novel was published in 1920. In it she introduced Hercule Poirot the detective who appeared then in 33 novels.In1930 she wrote a remarkable detective story The Murder at the Vicarage, about her other world- famous detective, Miss Marple who appeared in 12 novels and 20 short stories. It was a huge success, this book made Agatha Christie famous. Readers loved her books and wanted more of this stories.
Agatha Christie was honored by readers and writers as a powerful detective story writer. She wrote 66 novels, 15 plays, and 157 short stories. She also wrote 6 romances and 4 non-fiction books. Agatha Christie died in 1976, at the age of 85. Agatha Christie’s books are translated into 103 languages, and they are still popular today.
