- introducing THE PAST SIMPLE TENSE
- To develop students’ abilities of reading, translating, writing, listening, memorizing
The Past Simple
- Why is it used? – To speak about actions and events in the past
- What helps us to “see” The Past Simple? – adverbs of time, “time-words”:
yesterday, 2 years/days ago,
last winter/Monday; when I
was a child; in 1998, etc.
The Past Simple
How to form? – Use V 2
Regular verbs – V 1 + ed
Irregular verbs – LEARN !
want – wanted: He wanted to sleep yesterday .
go – went: He went to bed at 10 p.m. yesterday.
Verb “to be” in the Past Simple it is an irregular verb
am
are – were
WAS
Is
We were ill.
I was ill.
He was ill.
The Past Simple Affirmative sentences +
Subject – was/were – /object/ – adverb .
I was at school yesterday .
We were in the park last Sunday .
The past simple: Negative sentences -
was not = wasn’t
were not = weren’t
I was not at school on Sunday – it was closed.
We weren’t in the park last week – we were ill.
The past simple: Questions ?
Was/were – subject …………?
Was he at school on Sunday ? –
No, he wasn’t .
Were you in the park 2 days ago ? –
Yes, we were .
