The three Sillies

THE THREE SILLIES

In a small village there lives a farmer, his wife and his daughter. One man loves the farmer’s daughter. He wants to marry her.

One day the farmer invites the man to have dinner with them. The daughter is happy. She goes to the cellar. She wants to bring the beer. In the cellar she sees a mallet one the ceiling. The girl says, “If I marry this man and we have a son he will go to the cellar to bring the beer. The mallet will fall on his head and kill him. Oh, my poor son!”

The girl sits down and cries. The farmer, his wife and the man want to have beer for dinner. They can not wait for the girl. Her mother goes to the cellar. She sees the daughter. She asks, “Why do you cry? What is the matter?” The girl answers, “Look at the mallet. If I marry this man and we have a son, he will go to the cellar to bring the beer. The mallet will fall on his head and kill him. Oh, my poor son!” The mother says, “Oh, my poor grandson!” And they sit down together and cry.

The farmer and the man want to have beer for dinner. They can not wait for the girl and her mother. The farmer goes to the cellar. He sees his wife and his daughter. He asks, “Why do you cry? What is the matter?” The girl answers, “Look at the mallet.” The mother says, “If our daughter marries this man and they have a son, he will go to the cellar to bring the beer. The mallet will fall on his head and kill him. Oh, my poor grandson!” The farmer says, “It is terrible!” And they sit down together and cry.

The man is worried. He runs to the cellar. He sees the farmer, the girl and her mother. He asks, “Why do you cry? What is the matter?”The farmer stands up and says, “Do you see this mallet? If our daughter marries you and you have a son, he will go to the cellar to bring the beer. The mallet will fall on his head and kill him. Oh, my poor grandson! It is terrible!” And they all cry again. The man smiles and says, “You are very silly. I will travel and I will come back only if I can find other three silly people. If I understand that you are not very silly I will marry your daughter.”

The three sillies start to cry because the man does not marry the girl. And the man starts to travel. He travels for a day and sees a small house. There is some grass on the roof of the house. A woman tries to get her cow to climb to the roof. The cow moos and does not want to climb. The man asks, “What do you do?” The woman answers, “Do you see the grass on the roof? I want to feed my cow with it!” The man says, “You are very silly. You can cut the grass and give it to the cow.” But the woman does not understand him. And the man walks away.

The man walks and sees a boy. The boy hangs his trousers on the ladder and tries to jump inside them. He jumps and jumps. He is tired. He sees the man and says, “I do not like trousers. Every day I spend two hours to jump inside them. It is terrible!” The man smiles and thinks, “He is very silly.”

The man comes to a village. It is night. There is a moon in the sky. He sees a pond. There are many people around it. They have brooms and sticks in their hands. They put them into water and take out. The man asks, “What do you want to find in the pond?” The people say, “The moon fell down into the pond! We want to catch it!” The man says, “But the moon is in the sky, there is only a shadow of it in the pond. Look!”

But the people do not believe him and try to find the moon in the pond. The man sees that there are a lot of silly people in the world. He understands that the farmer, his wife and his daughter are not very silly. He comes back to them. The man marries the girl and they live together. They are a very happy family.
