Приложение 1

“The beauty and the Beast”

Once’ there lives a merchant with his three daughters. One day the merchant was going to go abroad to market, and so he asked each of his three daughters what she would like as a present upon his return. The first daughter wanted a beautiful dress; the second a pearl necklace; but the third, whose name was Beauty (the youngest, prettiest and the sweetest of them all), said to her father:

“All I would like is a rose that you have picked specially for me!”

When the merchant had finished his business, he started home. However, a sudden storm blew up, and his horse could hardly find his way. Cold and hungry, the merchant had lost all the hope of reaching an inn when he suddenly noticed a bright light shining in the middle of the wood. As he came nearer, he saw that it was a castle.

“I hope I’ll find shelter there for the night”, he said to himself. When he reached the door, he saw that it was open. He should but nobody came to greet him. He went inside, still calling to attract attention, but no one answered. In the main hall he saw a splendid dinner laid on the dining table. The merchant was very hungry, so he sat down and started to eat.

After dinner, he went upstairs along a corridor that led to magnificent rooms and halls. In the first room there was a warm fire in a fireplace and a soft bed that looked very inviting. It was already late, and so as soon as the merchant lay down on the bed, he fell asleep. When he woke up the next morning, he saw that an unknown hand had placed a cup of coffee and some fruit by his bedside.

The merchant ate the breakfast and went downstairs to thank his generous host. But just as before, nobody was there. Shaking his head in wonder, he went to the garden where he had left his horse near a big tree. There he saw a large rose bush, and so remembering his promise to Beauty, he picked a rose. Immediately a horrible beast wearing splendid clothes jumped out of the rose garden.

“Ungrateful man! I gave you shelter; you ate at my table and slept in my own

bed! But now all the thanks I get is the theft of my favorite flowers! I’ll kill you for this!” The merchant was very frightened.
