(Music enriches our hearts and feelings).
What music do you like listening to when you have free time?
(It depends on my mood. When I am free I listen to sentimental music).

(The music I hate is complicated one. I switch off the radio when I listen to boring music).
In Britain there are strong local traditions of music that are still alive. What are the musical centres of Britain?
(- Pupil 1: Let’s start from the north of Britain, Scotland. The national instrument is the bagpipe. To the Scots bagpipe music is the most exciting in the world. Every town in Scotland has a pipe band).
P2: The North of England is the land of the brass band
P3: Central and southern England is famous for church choirs. Music is always found in the village church.
P4: The Welsh people are famous for their singing. Their bands were known to the ancient world. They still meet every year at the “ Eisteddfod”, a Welsh competition.
P5: London, the capital of the UK, has a long tradition of classical music. Every night English and international musicians perform in the concert halls and opera houses.
British newspapers inform the readers about popular musical events of the year that are well known in Britain. What do you know about them? What are famous British festivals?
P6: Aldeburgh festival.Aldeburgh is a town of the Suffolk coast of England where the music festival is held every summer. The festival was started by Benjamin Britten.
P7: Eisteddfod is an international festival of folk dancing and music held every July in Llangollen, North Wales. The festival is a colourful spectacle drawing singers, dancers and musicians from many parts of the world.
P8.: Promenade concerts or “Proms” are monthly events in Britain. People can watch Promenades on TV. In 1895, Sir Henry Wood conducted the first Promenade concert in London. Proms are often held in Barbican Hall in London. People were allowed to stand or walk during the concert in order to make the atmosphere more informal. Proms are the most important annual classical music festival in Britain. Many concerts are sold out.
What British musicians do you know?
Henry Purcell (1659-1695) is a famous British musician who wrote the first British classical opera “ Dido and Aeneas”
Benjamin Britten (1913 -1976) is an English composer of music mainly for voices. He was a master of vocal music of all kinds. He began writing music as a child. Later in life he wrote a great deal of music for young children. Britten started the Alderburgh Festival.
Henry Wood (1869-1944) is an English composer who started Promenade concerts in London.
9. What American musicians do you know?
- Louis Armstrong (1900-1971) is an American jazz musician, singer and bandleader. He began playing music when he was 13. He didn’t study in a music school. Because of his musical genius the classic music of black Americans has become the music of all Americans.
- Bob Dylan (1941- ) is an American singer and writer of songs who has a great influence on popular music in the 1960s.
- Michael Jackson (1958- 2009) was an American popular music singer and songwriter.
- Madonna (1958- ) is a very successful singer known for her unusual often extreme styles in clothes and appearance.
- Prince (1958 - ) is an American singer and writer of popular music. He was one of the most successful singers of the 1980s. His songs are considered shocking by some people.
-Tina Turner (1938- ) is an American popular music singer who was very successful in live concerts.
What Russian musicians do you know?
Michail Glinka (1804 -1857) is a Russian composer. He is considered to be a founder of the Russian national symphonic music. His most famous are “Ruslan and Lyudmila”, “Life for the Tsar”.
Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936) is a Russian composer. He wrote symphonies, concerts, operas and ballets. His most famous ballet is Raimonda.
Tikhon Khrennikov is a well- known Russian composer born in Elets (Lipetsk region). He wrote music for films. “Hussars’ Ballad” is still popular.
Peter Chaikovski (1840-1893) - is a Russian composer, one of the best known and most admired writers of music. He wrote symphonies, ballets and operas. His music is rich and emotional.
Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) is a Russian composer and piano player. His music is bright, romantic and passionate.
Mstislav Rostropovich is an outstanding Russian violoncello player and conductor. In 1974 he was to immigrate. He is reputed to be the leading violoncello player of the world and one of the most gifted and experienced conductors.
Dimitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) is a Russian composer. His most famous works include the opera “ The Lady Macbeth of the Mzensk”, “The Ninth Symphony”, “The Tenth Symphony”.
Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) –is a Russian composer whose works include the ballet “Romeo and Juliet” and the musical story “ Peter and the Wolf”
What countries are internationally known as musical countries?
-Russia, Italy and Germany are considered to be musical countries.
Richard Wagner, Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelson, Johann Bach are famous German composers. Beethoven began to lose his hearing at the peak of his career. He wrote the Ninth Symphony after he became completely deaf. Giuseppe Verdi, Puccini, Vivaldi are well-known in the world Italian composers.
Do you like classical music?
Most young people like pop music but there are teenagers who prefer Rossini to rock. They think that classical music enriches them. It makes them think of happy times. But in my opinion classical music is annoying and boring. It puts me to sleep. I don’t understand it.
Much depends on your behavior during a concert. Are you a good audience? What are five things you are asked not to do during a concert?
1).Please, do not drink during a performance.
2). Please, do not eat during a concert.
3).Please, do not cough during the music.
4).Please, ensure that all alarms are switched off.
5). Remember! Taking of photographs is strictly forbidden.
Do you often invite your friends to concerts?
-I do not invite my friends to a concert very often because it is difficult to persuade him to go there. I usually tell him: “ Let’s go to the concert. The musicians are going to be a success.
Do your parents like the music you listen to?
-Grown-ups sometimes criticize young people for listening to the latest music. They hear nothing but noise and bad message. They worry about how it will affect their children. My parents like music I listen to because I don’t listen to songs with bad message.
Do you have favourite performers (groups) at the moment?
-My favourite singer/ group is…
What musical instruments do you know? Can you play any musical instrument?
I know such musical instruments as piano, drums, guitar, violin, trumpet, viola, clarniet, synthesizer, saxophone, bass guitar. I cannot play musical instruments but most of all I like the sound of the guitar.
What styles of music do you know? Which of them are popular in our country?
I know such popular music styles as jazz, country music, rock, blues, rap. The world of music is rich and varied. Jazz is an American style of music based on improvisation and variation. Rock is a style of music that was very popular in the 1950s and it is played now. It has a strong loud beat and is usually played on electrical instruments. Rap is a musical style where the singer speaks or shouts the words.
