How many hearts in this picture?

Our lesson is connected with a beautiful holiday, one of the most popular in Great Britain. On the 14th of February people celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. This holiday is the favourite holiday of all English children and adults.

Today we will read about the history of this holiday, have a competition and write cards. I hope you’ll enjoy our English lesson and be friendly to each other. I wish you good luck! Let’s start This is a sad story about love. Now let’s read the text about it.

There is a beautiful legend behind St. Valentine’s Day. Saint Valentine lived in Rome in the third century AD . At that time the Emperor of Rome was Claudius. He wasn’t very popular because he was trying to get more and more people for his army. The men didn’t want to go to the army and Claudius thought that it was because they didn’t want to leave their wives and children. «If they don’t get married, they’ll join the army,” he thought and passed a law which banned marriage.

Valentine was a Christian priest who didn’t like the new law. He secretly married people who were in love. One night the emperor’s soldiers caught him and put him in prison. Valentine was going to die.

Many young people felt sorry for Valentine and visited him in prison. One of them was the daughter of a prison guard. On the day of his execution Valentine wrote a note to her and signed it “Love from your Valentine “. This was on 14 February 269 AD.

Since then 14 February has been the Day of Love, when people send love letters and presents to each other. They don’t sign the cards with their names , but write “Guess Who” or “Your Valentine”

At first this was a European tradition, but then it became popular in other countries.

Okey, I have a picture. You should find differences between them.

And now we’ll have an English contest. We’ll play games, recite poems-so I hope that we’ll enjoy the holiday and have a good time. So I wish you good luck. Let’s start

– Hello! I’m your Valentine card. I’m beautiful and fun. I’d like you to be my Valentine.

– Be my Valentine. You are the most beautiful.

– Be my Valentine. You are lovely and smart.

– And now say compliments to each other. You must say good and kind words and go to each other. Stand up. Come here.

Listen to the new words and repeat them after the speaker (rose, arrow, Cupid, candy hearts, a box of chocolates, a valentine card, heart, a date, kiss).

You should match the famous couples.

ADAM JOSEPHINE

NAPOLEON CINDERELLA

RHET BUTTLER JULIET

PRINCE CHARLES EVE

ROMEO CLEOPATRA

PRINCE SCARLET O'HARA

So, it’s time to finish the lesson. And now answer my questions:

1. When do we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day?

2. Who was Valentine?

3. What do we do on that day?

Your homework is to break this secret code. Now, look at the blackboard, name the number and answer the question about the text. Today I’ve got a message, but I cannot read it. It is in code. Help me to break this secret code. The key will help you.

(I hearty hope you have a Happy Valentine’s Day. 9 8 5 1 18 20 25 8 15 16 5 25

15 21 8 12 25 1 8 1 16 16 25 2 21 12 5 14 12 9 14 5 ’19 4 1 25.)

Our lesson is over. Good-bye!
