All four Beatles were born during the 1940s and grew up in the seaport of Liverpool, the city on the banks of the river Mersey.
John Lennon formed this group and he was the leader of “The Beatles”. John formed his first group when he was still at school. It was called “The Quarrymen”. Their first single “Love Me Do” became in 1962.
John was introduced to James Paul McCartney. A year younger than John, Paul was a better guitarist and earned himself a place in the band.
Paul wanted his friend, George Harrison to join, but he was only 14 and John would not let him join the group for a year.
In January 1963 Ringo Starr joined the group.
John, Paul, George and Ringo became more than just pop-stars, they became the voice of a new generation. The Beatles showed professionalism and made impressive figures on the stage. They looked nicer than anyone else. They created a new “clean” image with short hair, white shirts and elegant suits.
Their songs and unusual sense of humour and their intelligence drew attention to them. Many people began listening to pop music. Girls loved “The Beatles” and young men tried to look like them.
During the 1960s, “The Beatles” were always in the news headlines: film, world tours and sometimes scandals. A hysteria that is called “Beatlomania” swept Britain and soon afterwards, America. John once suggested that “the Beatles” were better known than Jesus Christ.
