Word Formation Process

The term "word formation" refers to the processes through which new words are created. This short presentation will outline the basic word formation processes!

I have chosen this theme because everyone must know how the words are formed.

In this presentation I`m going to show the main approaches of word-building.

So, Word fomation consists of 4 main approaches such as root words, derived words, compounds and shortenings.

1). Root words have only a root morpheme in their structure. Examples:...

Also there are many root words that are frequently used as parts of common words in the English language. They are: aqua means water and it is formed from aquamarine;

com means together, it is formed from community;

geo means earth, it is formed from geography;

2). Derivation - is the word formation process in which a derivational affix attaches to the base form of a word to create a new words.

3). Compouding is the process of putting words together to build a new one that doesn`t denote 2 things but one and that is pronounced as one unit.

4). Shortening are words produced by shortening.

Sortening is also called clipping. Clipping refers to the reduction of a polysyllabic word by dropping a syllable or more from it.

5). Types of clipping

The first type of clipping is called Back clipping.

As we can see the beginning is retained.

The second type is called Fore-clipping. In this case the final part is retained.

The third type is called Middle clipping.

Here the middle part is retained.

And the forth type is called Medial clipping.

Words with the middle part of the word left out are equally few.
