Text: Rubber

We all know what rubber is. We have seen it on the wheels of cars; we have used it to rub our mistakes in drawing; we have played games with rubber balls. When we press a piece of rubber we change its shape. But as soon as stop pressing, the rubber springs back to its first shape: we therefore say that rubber is elastic.

Rubber was first used to make rubber balls. In 1492, Columbus sailed from Spain and discovered America. One of the many strange things which he and his men saw in America was a game played with rubber balls. They noticed that the rubber balls bounced much better than the balls which they had used in their own country. When they sailed home again they told that the balls were made from the gum of a tree.

Hundreds of years had passed before rubber was used in Europe and other parts of the world. Small pieces of rubber were brought to Europe and kept by people who liked to collect strange things; but no one thought that rubber could be useful. Then an artist found out that rubber would rub out pencil marks. That was one of the first uses of rubber, and that is how it came to be called «rubber”.

Rubber trees grow only in countries where it is hot and very damp. These countries are near the equator; so it was in the countries near the equator that men went out to hunt for rubber trees. In was not easyto find the trees. In those hot damp lands, trees of many kinds grow so close together that it is difficult to travel through the forests.

The men who were hunting for rubber trees found them growing wild in South America, in Central America, and in West Africa. Nearly all the world’s rubber came from the great forests of America and West Africa.

3- задание Eighty –four years alone.

Once there was a poor farmer whose wife had died, leaving him with seven children he wasn’t able to feed, so he called his sons together and asked each of them to decide his own future. One of his sons chooses to live alone on an island, like Robinson Crusoe.

In 1888, the boy , who was then just sixteen, was taken to an island. In the early days his father brought him small presents, sometimes a little food, sometimes an old piece of clothes, a knife a cup, a cooking pot, or a towel. But the journey was long. After sometime, the visits stopped and he lived from one year to the next without seeing to another human being. In the meantime there were two wars. His island had been part of three different countries and he didn’t know anything about it.

In 1972 his island was visited by a crew of fisherman. They found him with no clothes except some rabbit skins round his neck. By shouting from a distance of about twenty meters, they managed to make out the meaning of what he said. He would not let them look at his home, a stone hut with no windows. If they tried to get near him, he either threatened them with a rock in each hand, or pretended he was going to run away.

They talked with him for two hours. He didn’t know anything about war and could not understand why any man would want to kill another. When asked how old he was, he answered, “About a hundred years”.

They left a bottle of beer, some second-hand clothing, and tins of food, showing him how open them. Then after wishing him a happy hundredth birthday, they put out to sea.
